Equality Australia is a leading national LGBTIQ+ organisation built from the successful campaign for marriage equality. Equality Australia is a registered charity with a primary office in Sydney, and team members also working in the ACT and Melbourne.

Role Overview

The newly created role of Operations Director, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the organisation, support the growing team and evolving systems that enable Equality Australia to deliver on its strategy and impact. Reporting to the CEO, you’ll be responsible for overseeing critical aspects of its operations, including finance, human resources, ICT and premises functions, playing a key role in the overall leadership and strategic direction of the organisation and executive team.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management:

  • Coordinate the development of and manage budgets, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability.
  • Manage the working capital and cash investment requirements of the organisation.
  • Monitor financial performance, analyse trends, and make informed recommendations.
  • Collaborate with the team to optimise resource allocation and funding strategies.

Human Resources:

  • Lead HR initiatives, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and policies.
  • Foster a positive organisational culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Operational Excellence:

  • Oversee premises management and vendor relationships.
  • Implement efficient processes to enhance productivity and streamline operations.
  • Drive IT improvements, leveraging technology to enhance our impact.
  • You will work closely with the CEO and Board and have primary responsibility for certain board sub-committees; Risk and Audit Committee, and the newly established Investment Committee
  • Maintain oversight of contracts, corporate registration and regulatory requirements (charities reporting, fundraising licences, intellectual property) and legal engagements.
  • Working with the CEO, Chair of Risk & Audit Committee and internal ‘risk owners’, lead risk governance and continuous risk management across the organisation

Qualifications and Experience

  • Leadership experience, high emotional intelligence and a demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated track record of at least 10 years in professional roles within operations, finance, human resources, risk and/or compliance.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including the ability to lead and execute operations projects (e.g. ICT projects) effectively, with strong organisational skills to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines and budgets in dynamic environments.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen, including ability to negotiate contracts, leases and other commercial arrangements.
  • Expertise in financial management, including financial strategy, budgeting, reporting, compliance, and financial analysis, ensuring sound fiscal stewardship aligned with organisational objectives and donor/funder requirements.
  • Understanding of HR standards and legislative frameworks (e.g. SCHADS Awards) and regulatory environment for charities.
  • Commitment to LGBTIQ+ communities, with a passion for advancing human rights and social justice.
