About the role

This is a broad and hands-on role with a strong focus on analysing financial performance, research grant financial management and business partnering.

You will work closely with research leaders and operational teams to ensure robust financial oversight, clear reporting and strong financial literacy across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

Business partnering & stakeholder engagement

  • Partner with research group leaders to provide financial insights and support decision-making
  • Translate financial data into clear, meaningful commentary for non-finance stakeholders
  • Deliver training to improve financial literacy across research teams

Financial planning & reporting

  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process
  • Own the end-to-end monthly reporting cycle and provide insightful analysis
  • Prepare reports for board and committee meetings
  • Support external reporting requirements including grants and funding bodies

Research grants management

  • Oversee the financial lifecycle of research grants – from invoicing to acquittal. Develop strong relationships with university finance and research team.
  • Monitor grant income, expenditure and compliance requirements
  • Perform regular analysis of different funding streams, infrastructure funding calculations and direct and indirect costs of research drivers

Operations & leadership

  • Support the CFO on strategic initiatives, process improvements and financial controls
  • Manage and develop staff, with oversight of Accounts Payable function
  • Ensure all staff hires are checked as per approved budget and spend plans

About you

You are an experienced Finance Business Partner who is confident working with complex stakeholders and enjoys bringing financial clarity to non-finance audiences.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience in financial planning, budgeting and reporting
  • Strong experience working with research grants or within a university/research environment (essential)
  • Ability to interpret financial data and communicate insights clearly
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement and influencing
  • Leadership experience, including mentoring or managing staff
  • Relevant accounting qualification (CA/CPA)

Exposure to multiple finance systems and the ability to quickly learn new tools will be highly regarded.
