The Opportunity

Ballardong Aboriginal Corporation is seeking a community-focused Senior Coordinator Community Engagement to lead and strengthen BAC’s engagement, communication and relationship-building activities across the Ballardong ILUA region.

This important role will help build trust, strengthen community participation, improve communication and support meaningful engagement between BAC, its members, Elders, Traditional Owners and the wider community.

The position will play a significant role in implementing BAC’s Community Development and Engagement priorities, ensuring Ballardong people are informed, connected and actively involved in shaping the future direction of the Corporation.

The role supports BAC’s vision of achieving self-determination through stronger social, cultural and economic outcomes for Ballardong and Noongar people.

Working closely with the Executive Leadership Team, Elders, community groups and stakeholders, the Senior Coordinator Community Engagement will help create culturally safe, respectful and inclusive engagement processes that strengthen community confidence and organisational accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Lead the development and implementation of community engagement strategies and activities across the Ballardong region.
  • Build strong and respectful relationships with Ballardong members, Elders, Traditional Owners and community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate culturally appropriate consultation, engagement and communication processes.
  • Support inclusive and respectful opportunities for community participation and feedback.
  • Promote positive relationships between BAC and community through visible, responsive and transparent engagement.
  • Support community building, respectful dialogue and constructive participation across the region.

Community Activities

  • Assist with the coordination of regional meetings, information sessions and community forums.
  • Assist in promoting BAC’s programs, opportunities and achievements within community.
  • Lead a coordinated culturally grounded approach to activities relating to Aboriginal specific events such as National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, NIADOC week, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
  • Coordinate BAC’s contribution to other significant community events, across the Ballardong region.

Communication & Information Sharing

  • Coordinate regular communication with members through newsletters, social media, website updates and community information materials.
  • Support the preparation of culturally appropriate communication resources and engagement content.
  • Assist the Leadership Team with communicating strategic priorities, projects and organisational updates.
  • Lead BAC’s regular reporting to members of the corporation and members of the Ballardong Noongar members.
  • Ensure community members are informed about opportunities, programs, consultations and organisational developments.
  • Support the development of communication systems that improve transparency and accountability.

Stakeholder & Partnership Engagement

  • Build positive working relationships with local organisations, schools, government agencies, service providers and community groups.
  • Coordinate BAC’s representation at meetings, events and regional forums where required.
  • Support partnerships that strengthen opportunities and outcomes for Ballardong people.
  • Assist with community-based projects and initiatives involving external stakeholders and partners.

Operational & Administrative Support

  • Maintain accurate records of engagement activities, consultations and community feedback.
  • Prepare reports, briefing notes and engagement summaries for management and the Board where required.
  • Assist with implementing policies, procedures and systems relating to community engagement activities.
  • Support continuous improvement in BAC’s engagement and communication practices, including ongoing monitoring and evaluation of BAC’s community engagement strategies.
  • Supervise and support community engagement staff and volunteers.
  • Selection Criteria
  • Essential
  • Strong value alignment with Ballardong Corporation’s vison, mission and purpose.
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement, stakeholder relations, community development or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal community engagement principles and culturally safe communication practices.
  • Experience working collaboratively with Aboriginal communities, Elders and community organisations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate community meetings, consultations and engagement activities.
  • Ability to manage sensitive issues respectfully, professionally and confidentially.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills including report writing and record management.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and respond flexibly to community needs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and digital communication platforms.
  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence.
  • National Police Clearance (issued within the last six months).
  • Work from the BAC Northam office at least 3 days each week.
  • Availability to travel throughout the Ballardong region when required.
  • Desirable
  • Relevant qualification in Community Development, Social Sciences, Communications, Aboriginal Studies or related discipline.
  • Experience working within an Aboriginal Corporation, Native Title organisation or community-controlled organisation.
  • Understanding of Ballardong culture, community priorities and the South West Native Title Settlement.
  • Experience coordinating community events, programs or consultation processes.
