Community Support Worker

Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation
  • Aboriginal, female-identified position

We would like to hear from you if you have qualifications and experience in community, youth or social work, if you have what it takes to work with urban First Nations individuals and families whose lives are affected by intergenerational trauma, and if you relish the prospect of working in an Aboriginal-led organisation.

You could join us in Sydney’s Outer West supporting mob to deal with the practicalities of being the best they can be—practicalities like keeping a roof over their head, interacting successfully with government departments, and coping when the kids go AWOL or are in out-of-home care.

Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation offers a unique environment for generalist social and/or community support work across the spectrum of the challenges our people face. Our approach is strengths-based and grounded in our culture.

IMPORTANT NOTE: applicants for the previously advertised social work position will automatically be considered for this position if they meet the essential selection criteria for this position.

THIS ROLE: Part-time, 4 days per week fixed-term position.

Position start date: as soon as possible. Funded until late December 2021.

We are looking to recruit at Level 4 on the SCHCADS scale.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Supporting individuals and families with a range of issues and needs;
  • Building and maintaining respectful relationships with help-seekers;
  • Identifying and liaising with help-seekers' existing supports;
  • Advocacy and referral;
  • Filling support gaps;
  • Working cooperatively with other services and liaising productively with government departments to ensure that help-seekers’ needs are met;
  • Accompanying help-seekers to appointments, court attendances, etc.;
  • Conducting home visits when necessary;
  • Record-keeping.

ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA:

The minimum qualifications and core competencies we will require you to demonstrate in your written application and/or at interview

  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in addition to a degree in social or community work, or non-degree qualifications in community, youth or social work with a significantly longer period of directly relevant experience;
  • Understanding of the culture of one or more suburban Aboriginal communities;
  • Ability to communicate empathetically and respectfully with Aboriginal community members;
  • Ability to work from a trauma-informed, strengths-based perspective;
  • Understanding of the impact on Aboriginal families and communities of (a) the present NSW child protection and criminal justice systems, and (b) the availability of alcohol and other drugs in Western Sydney;
  • Ability to advocate effectively for community members with government departments;
  • Resourcefulness in supporting clients by means of appropriate referrals;
  • Ability to maintain appropriate records;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;
  • Understanding of the importance of boundaries and the ability to maintain them in a loosely structured work environment;
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of work health and safety, cultural safety, privacy and confidentiality, and equal opportunity.
