Board Secretary / Board Member (Voluntary)

Australian Marine Conservation Society
  • Board Secretary (Voluntary), plus additional board role (General Member)

About Us

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia's ocean. As Australia's peak ocean conservation organisation and one of the founding members of the national conservation movement, we've spent 55+ years defending our coasts and marine wildlife — from protecting Ningaloo and the Great Barrier Reef, to ending whaling, stopping supertrawlers and safeguarding threatened species like the Australian sea lion.

We're entering an exciting period of growth and impact — and our ocean has never needed us more.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a principled, highly organised Board Secretary to join our National Management Committee. This is a critical governance role, supporting strong Board decision-making, clear records and effective compliance as AMCS continues to grow its impact for Australia's ocean.

Working closely with the President, Board, CEO and senior staff, you'll be a trusted governance adviser and steady custodian of AMCS' constitutional and statutory obligations — far more than a minute-taker, you'll help the Board and its committees operate at their best.

  • Location: Secretary must be based in Queensland or within 65km of the Queensland border. General Members can be located anywhere in Australia
  • Commitment: Approx. 3–6 hours/month (more around AGM and governance cycles)
  • Term: Three years, subject to endorsement at AGM/SGM
  • Remuneration: Voluntary position; reasonable expenses reimbursed

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and coordinating Board and member meeting agendas, papers, minutes and resolutions
  • Ensuring compliance with AMCS' Constitution, statutory obligations and governance frameworks
  • Maintaining accurate, secure governance records and registers
  • Supporting Board induction, development, recruitment and succession
  • Championing a Board culture of integrity, respect and transparency

What We're Looking For

  • Previous Board, committee or governance experience, ideally in the not-for-profit or charity sector
  • Experience advising a Chair/Board on governance, compliance and regulatory matters
  • Strong understanding of meeting procedure, minute-taking, records management and NFP legal obligations in Australia
  • Excellent written communication and outstanding attention to detail and discretion
  • Confidence to advise on statutory and constitutional process, escalating for specialist advice where needed
  • A genuine passion for protecting our ocean and marine life

Desirable: formal governance/company secretarial qualifications, experience with ACNC/ASIC or incorporated association reporting, and experience in the environmental, advocacy, fundraising or community sectors.

Other requirements: satisfactory police check; compliance with ACNC responsible person obligations; AMCS membership; appointment subject to member endorsement at AGM/SGM.

Also Seeking: General Member

AMCS also welcomes expressions of interest from prospective General Members to join our Board, with particular priority given to candidates bringing skills and experience in:

  • Marine conservation / marine science
  • IT / AI / cybersecurity
  • Fundraising / philanthropy

If you're passionate about ocean protection and bring expertise in one of these areas, we'd love to hear from you.

AMCS is a strictly non-partisan, equal opportunities organisation committed to a diverse Board and workforce. We strongly encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, LGBTIQ+ people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
