Rebecca Vassarotti MLA, Member for Kurrajong, is seeking a Housing Adviser for her ACT Greens Assembly team.
Delivering more affordable, community and public housing options for Canberrans and ending homelessness is fundamental to ACT Greens’ mission, and so Rebecca is looking for someone with the knowledge, skills and passion to push the ACT further on making this a city where decent housing is available for all.
Duties
Reporting directly to Rebecca Vassarotti, the Housing Adviser will develop campaigns and provide tactical and strategic political advice to Rebecca and the ACT Greens MLA team. Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Driving the ACT Greens housing strategy, working with community stakeholders to develop and deploying our vision while building relationships and consensus to move issues forward.
- Fostering and developing relationships with the community and stakeholders and assisting with committee, electorate and constituent activities.
- Working closely with planning and treasury advisers on the enabling and fiscal levers needed to deliver more housing supply, alongside Federal Greens colleagues.
- Developing detailed housing policy, providing advice, working with the community to understand and effectively advocate for issues, and drafting speeches for Rebecca and on occasion other MLAs.
- Critically analysing and reviewing complex policy issues.
- Working with and assisting advisers and office managers in their roles on more complex issues.
- Working closely with other policy advisers, media advisers and the Chief of Staff to support and provide input into longer term planning, strategy development, and policy review for the GreensMLA team.
- Assisting with issues management and preparation for Assembly sitting periods, including legislation, motions, Private Member’s Business, and other Legislative Assembly business.
- Reviewing material and advising the MLA for Assembly committee inquiries and reports.
- Assisting with communications and media inquiries in the portfolios.
- Applying a demonstrated commitment, or willingness, to implement ACT Greens principles and policies around ecological sustainability, social justice, peace and non-violence and grassroots participatory democracy.
- Commitment to working in, and contributing to, a positive team culture.
- Other duties as directed.
Selection criteria
- Demonstrated experience in policy research and development, with engagement in housing policy or programs a plus.
- Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, oral, and relationship management skills. We are particularly interested in understanding how you work across teams to create role clarity and get a good result.
- Capacity to work independently, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Experience in or ability to learn about parliamentary systems, ACT legislation and ACT politics.
- Experience in community campaigning and/or an affinity with community sector or campaigns sector.

The role will be for the term of the 11th Assembly at Adviser Level 1 (bands range from $82,737 to $102,185 plus 7% LAMS allowance, actual pay subject to experience and available budget). The role is part time, 4 days per week.
The successful candidate will be engaged under a Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff contract, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the ACT Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff Enterprise Agreement 2023-2026. It is not an ACT Public Service position.
