About the ACIJ

ACIJ was launched in 2019 to fill a large gap in legal services available to survivors of torture, war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity, seek access to justice and accountability in Australia. Our work has been said to be ground-breaking in Australia. We are the first and only specialist legal centre working with victims and survivor communities and organisations to bring legal action to end the impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of these crimes. Our primary aim is to develop Australia's capacity to undertake investigations and prosecutions of international crimes, sometimes known as universal jurisdiction - a huge challenge we’re working hard to meet. In addition to our legal work, ACIJ has a dedicated program on policy and law reform. Our work to date has been underpinned by our legal advocacy, strategic policy engagement and collaboration with others. Our work is informed by the values of justice, accountability, human rights, dignity, courage and solidarity.

ACIJ is a company limited by guarantee, a registered charity, and is endorsed as a public benevolent institution with DGR status, and is based in Sydney.
