Whittlesea Community Connections is a place-based community organisation and one of our five strategic priorities is that young people have a voice and sense of belonging in our community. The youth worker is a key part of a small youth team.
Overview of Duties
- Implement and continue to evolve a multi-sports (team sports) school program (Australian Rules Football, Soccer, Cricket, Netball, Volleyball & Basketball) for young women from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Work in collaboration with local schools to deliver the program by strengthening existing and developing new school partner relationships
- Collaborate with sporting industry partners who can guide and support program development and delivery
- Maintain and improve processes and practices to ensure child safety and culturally appropriate youth work
- Work with other services (internal and external to WCC) ensuring both young people and their families have access to relevant wrap around information and support
- Contribute to planning processes ensuring youth issues in the region are identified
- Participate in staff and team meetings and maintain a teamwork approach at all times, behaving in accordance with WCC standards, Code of Ethics and Child Safe policies and guidelines
- Recruit, train and support volunteers and students to support program development and delivery
- Collect and maintain appropriate and accurate records and data in line with privacy and confidentiality policies and procedures
- Provide timely progress reports as required by WCC and external funding bodies
- Support the youth team and other WCC teams deliver other activities, programs and events for young people including for example school holiday activities, youth events etc.
- Other duties, facilitation of programs and activities as required, supporting the needs of children and young people in the region
We are looking for someone with:
- Tertiary qualification and/ or equivalent experience working with young people, and coaching/facilitating sports participation or related field
- Experience in building skills and confidence with young women in navigating traditionally male-dominated settings (e.g. sports clubs, schools, workplaces, local government, health services)
- Understanding of the challenges and barriers faced by young women from CALD backgrounds navigating their everyday life, demonstrating principles of primary prevention, gender-based violence and intersectional frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience working with schools and in school settings
- Demonstrated experience working in the sports sector and understanding of accessibility issues and barriers in accessing sporting settings for young women of a CALD background.
- High standard of interpersonal skills and effective communication, with the ability to work and engage young people, community groups, schools and other key stakeholders
- An ability to work independently, with resourcefulness and self-motivation, and as part of a team
- A positive attitude to working with and demonstrated capacity to support volunteers
