For over 35 years, Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service (BGCLS) has stood alongside communities across Western Victoria, delivering free and accessible legal support to people experiencing disadvantage across 11 local government areas.

Guided by the principles of social justice, BGCLS partners with individuals, families and communities to create meaningful change—through legal assistance, education, and advocacy that empowers and informs.

Your Impact

You will be responsible for providing legal assistance to clients in key practice areas including family law and family violence and civil. Specifically, you will:

  • Maintain a caseload of routine and complex legal matters
  • Provide family violence list duty lawyer services in Horsham, Stawell and Ararat
  • Conduct litigation files and participate in dispute resolution
  • Engage in legal outreach, education and community development helping to build legal capability and awareness
  • Develop, collaborate, and nurture a wide range of stakeholder relationships to deliver outreach services and support referral pathways
  • Contribute to identifying and developing law reform strategies

What you bring

You are a lawyer committed to social justice who has ideally worked within the legal assistance sector or a law firm. You have a naturally empathetic style and can communicate information in a sensitive manner when dealing with diverse clients with complex vulnerabilities. You also have:

  • An unrestricted practicing certificate or are eligible to obtain one
  • Subject matter expertise in family law, family violence, victims of crime, and/or civil law
  • An understanding of working in a trauma-informed framework
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Highly effective stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills; an ability to build trust and collaboration with a cross section of the community and sector partners
  • A current driver’s licence and own transport for travel around the region
