Queensland Law Society (QLS) is the peak representative body for the legal profession in Queensland, providing leadership, guidance and support for more than 13,000 members, across all categories. With a rich history spanning over 150 years, QLS is committed to upholding the highest standards of legal practice, promoting access to justice, advocating for the interests of its members, playing a pivotal role in shaping the legal profession and influencing policy and legislative developments. QLS holds specific statutory responsibilities under the Legal Profession Act 2007 and is a not-for profit statutory body that annually reports to the Attorney-General.

Our current CEO is due to finish his successful 6 year term in 2024 which has created a vacancy for a new CEO. Therefore, we are seeking a dynamic and visionary CEO to lead the organisation into the future. The CEO will guide strategic direction, oversee the day-to-day operations, and ensure the Society fulfils its vision of serving and leading solicitors in Queensland. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the legal landscape and to contribute to the welfare of solicitors and the communities they serve.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership to QLS, driving the organisation’s strategic direction and ensuring its long-term sustainability and growth
  • Fostering a culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration among staff and members, inspiring and empowering them to achieve organisational objectives
  • Representing QLS as a key advocate, effectively engaging with key stakeholders, including government bodies, legal practitioners, community organisations, and the media
  • Developing and nurturing strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote and advance the interests of QLS
  • Overseeing the management of QLS’s financial resources, budgets and financial reporting, ensuring transparency, accountability and compliance with relevant regulations
  • Staying abreast of emerging trends, issues and challenges in the legal profession and proactively identifying opportunities for QLS to support and enhance the professional development of its members.

Underpinning your success we expect that you may possess:

  • Extensive leadership experience gained, preferably within the legal sector, or a strong connection to the law
  • Proven track record of strategic planning, organisation management, and driving successful outcomes in a complex and evolving environment
  • Strong understanding of the legal profession, its challenges, and the regulatory and policy landscape
  • Strong understanding of the Queensland Law Society
  • Experience in membership organisations, regulatory bodies, Queensland statutory bodies and not for profit organisations
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders effectively
  • Demonstrated financial acumen and experience in managing budgets, financial reporting, and risk mitigation
  • Experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with legal and government stakeholders and community organisations
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with a passion for fostering a culture of innovation, diversity and professional excellence
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, business administration or a related field is highly desirable
  • Board experience is required
  • Prior experience with regulation and compliance is essential
  • Background and/or knowledge of IT systems are desirable
