Make a Lasting Difference for Aboriginal Children and Families

Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) is a proud Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Ovens Murray region.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Family Services Practitioner to join our Child, Youth and Families team. In this role, you will provide culturally safe, child-centred and family-focused support to strengthen families, protect children and create positive, sustainable outcomes.

About the Role

This is a dynamic, community focused position delivering early intervention, reunification and placement prevention support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

As the Family Services Practitioner, you will work within a strengths-based, culturally led framework to support families experiencing vulnerability, ensuring the safety, stability and wellbeing of children and young people.

You will:

  • Provide quality, outcome-focused interventions to families, prioritising child safety and wellbeing
  • Work closely with families to support reunification and maintain meaningful connections with children and young people
  • Deliver practical and therapeutic support to enhance parenting capacity and reduce risk factors
  • Conduct risk and needs assessments and develop structured case plans in line with the Best Interests Framework
  • Provide intensive outreach support, including home visits, working flexibly to meet family needs
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with children, young people, families, Elders and community
  • Collaborate with Child Protection, Aboriginal organisations and key stakeholders to deliver coordinated care
  • Actively engage vulnerable and at-risk families, including those who may be difficult to engage
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential case notes, reporting and data collection
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment, including supervision, reflective practice and professional development

About You

You are a passionate practitioner committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal children, young people and families. You bring a culturally respectful, strengths-based approach and thrive in community focused work.

  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with families, children, young people and stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of culturally safe practice and commitment to Aboriginal self determination
  • Experience supporting families experiencing vulnerability, risk or complex needs
  • Sound understanding of Child Protection, family services and care team approaches
  • Strong assessment, case management and advocacy skills
  • Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Welfare, Youth Work or related field
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable children, young people and families
  • Strong understanding of child development, risk and protective factors, and family support frameworks 
  • Experience conducting risk and needs assessments and case management
  • Ability to build strong relationships with families and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and commitment to culturally safe practice
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Working with Children Check (VIC)
  • National Police Check

Desirable

  • Experience in child and family services, reunification, early intervention or family violence support
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal community controlled sector and culturally responsive practice

This position is paid under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2020 – Level 4.1, plus superannuation and salary packaging benefits.
