Aboriginal Family Violence Practitioner
Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation is seeking to appoint an Aboriginal Family Violence Practitioner within the Aboriginal Response Team.
The role will be co-located with The Orange Door, working at Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) and will provide screening, assessment, triage, and short term response to all incoming referrals through The Orange Door using an Integrated Practice Framework and ensuring the delivery of high quality, culturally safe and effective responses to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people seeking support and safety.
The Aboriginal Family Violence Practitioner role provides a visible and trusted point of contact within the community, ensuring individuals and families know where to access specialist support. The role supports people to identify and respond to family violence, child and family safety concerns, and broader wellbeing issues through culturally safe guidance, advocacy, and referral pathways.
This position will provide specialist support and advice to victims, families, children and adults Using Family Violence (AUFV). There is a strong focus on AUFV accountability, connection and coordination of access to support an approach across the scope of prevention and early intervention, and having a responsive system that builds service capacity, client experience and outcomes.
Technical Capabilities
- Supporting culturally safe and responsive practice in The Orange Door with Aboriginal children, families, and adults using family violence by:
- Providing specialist secondary case consultation and technical input on complex family violence cases, child and family and AUFV interventions
- Co working and providing daily specialist practice support for the Orange Door as requested and required with the Aboriginal Response Team.
- Carrying a caseload of complex and/or sensitive cases.
- Operating with autonomy and accountability in supporting Aboriginal children, families, and AUFV’s.
- Modelling integrated practice approaches and behaviours integral to ethical clinical practice working with Aboriginal children and families
- Sharing practice knowledge on Aboriginal approaches to holistic healing and whole of family practices
- Contributing to reflective practice for The Orange Door team in particular in relation to working effectively with Aboriginal people.
Behavioural Capabilities
- Building the cultural safety of The Orange Door and supporting choice and self-determination of Aboriginal people.
- Where appropriate liaising with and providing specialist or secondary consultation to organisations and services within The Orange Door
- Providing sound judgement and advice on identified risks and practice matters to the Team Leader.
Administrative Capabilities
- Deliver services to respond to local needs, ensuring they are delivered in a culturally safe and effective way, in accordance with self-determination and relevant legislation and government regulations and guidelines.
- Keep accurate and complete records of your work activities and ensure accuracy of client information in accordance with legislative requirements and the Victoria Government’s security and privacy policies and requirements.
- Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and for that of others in the workplace by working in accordance with legislative requirements and occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures.
- Participate in formal supervision and performance development and management.
- Other duties as assigned from time to time and in line with the scope of the position.
Key selection criteria
- Qualifications in a Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent is preferred, however a Diploma of Community Services Work/Cultural Diversity and/or a relevant discipline will be considered.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Family Violence. Has established experience and the capability to deliver culturally safe and responsive practice as part of a family violence integrated service model.
- Has a strong understanding of the role of the law and legal system in the context of responding to family violence; has knowledge of practice with Aboriginal victim survivors, children, families, and adults using family violence; has experience working in multi-disciplinary and multiagency contexts.
- Works collaboratively to drive cultural change: Has a clear concept of the culture required to deliver effective, culturally safe, and responsive services for Aboriginal people within an integrated practice context. Delivers innovative practices that enhance quality practice standards for Aboriginal people; and understands how to build and establish an effective practice culture.
- Self management: Invites feedback on own behaviour and impact; uses new knowledge or information about self to build a broader understanding of own behaviour and the impact it has on others; understands strong emotional reactions and seeks ways to manage them more effectively.

Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, families and individuals in culturally appropriate ways.
- Knowledge of child protection issues experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and families.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, monitor and review support plans.
- Clear and effective written and oral communication skills that is readily understood by the intended audience.
- Accurate record keeping and timely lodgement of reporting. Capacity to plan, implement, manage and evaluate programs.
- Demonstrated ability to use word processing packages including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Well developed interpersonal skills including the capacity to engage families and Elders in collaborative planning processes.
- Demonstrated capacity to manage sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and remain impartial at all times.
- Willingness and experience to take on higher duties and supervise other staff as required.
This position requires willingness to provide, complete and submit evidence prior to commencement of employment of:
- A current Driver’s Licence.
- A current Victorian Working with Children Check.
- A current Police Check.
- A Pre-employment Health Declaration.
This role is paid under Social, Community, Homecare and Disability Services Award 2020– Level 5.1
