Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC) is a place based community agency that strives for the empowerment of individuals and groups within the local community who face disadvantage, isolation and obstacles to effective social and economic participation. The agency is committed to developing responsive approaches to meet the challenges posed by Whittlesea's changing and emerging communities.

The Whittlesea Food Collective (WFC), launched by WCC in late 2019, is integrated with other initiatives including the Wollert Community Farm. Through these initiatives WCC aims to create a more equitable and sustainable food system in the City of Whittlesea, by supporting households experiencing financial hardship, strengthening community connections, improving health and wellbeing and increasing training and employment opportunities through community based food production and distribution.

Overview of duties include:

  • Starting work early (approximately 5am) to go to the wholesale Melbourne Market in Epping to buy produce that is good quality, culturally appropriate and locally sourced where available
  • Seeking competitively priced produce and negotiating with traders for a good deal
  • Maintaining rapport with traders and engaging new traders as required
  • Loading and unloading of truck using both manual labour and a walkie stacker
  • Driving a 3.5 tonne truck, which can be legally driven with a car licence, and delivering produce to the Whittlesea Food Collective and wholesale clients
  • Correctly storing produce to maximise freshness
  • Liaising with project coordinators, operations and wholesale clients to understand program and operational needs and respond effectively
