Campaign Organiser x2

Victorian Trades Hall Council

ABOUT THE ROLE

Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the voice of Victorians at work, coordinating the efforts of 40 affiliated unions and over 500,000 union members.

We are seeking to grow our Campaigns Team and employ x2 enthusiastic people for a full-time, fixed-term role through to Dec 18 (with the possibility to extend ongoing).

This is a dynamic and fast-paced role. In the space of a week, Organisers may find themselves supporting a union rally, dressing up in a costume for a public stunt action on Working From Home and making a hundred calls to recruit for an Activist Meeting.

DUTIES INCLUDE

At VTHC you’ll be part of a supportive and passionate team, in which you will:

  • Organise online and offline events including street stalls, phonebanks, campaign training, stunt actions, doorknocks and activist meetings
  • Provide support on affiliated unions’ campaigns and industrial actions
  • Take responsibility for an organising ‘patch’ in our 2026 State Election campaign, in which we will set the public agenda on issues that matter to working people
  • Manage a pool of volunteers, including: making recruitment calls, identifying leaders, having 1 on 1 catch-ups and supporting volunteers to take action
  • Use a campaign database to manage our supporter lists, create events and track volunteer engagement
  • Assist with other duties and VTHC priorities as required, which may on occasion include intrastate travel.

Key Selection Criteria

  • A passion for social justice and demonstrated commitment to union values
  • An eagerness to work with all of our diverse affiliate unions, regional Trades and Labour Councils and key organisational allies
  • Some experience in political or community organising (paid or voluntary)
  • Some experience in field campaigning (paid or voluntary)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build rapport with a variety of people with a wide range of political views
  • Highly developed written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to be nimble when plans need to change
  • A demonstrated capacity to work well in a team environment, while also managing individual projects and solo tasks
  • Competence in IT and social media skills.

There are no formal education requirements and candidates without any paid organising experience will be considered.

Even if you only meet some of these requirements but think you’re right for the job and are ready to learn, we're keen to hear from you!

ESSENTIAL TO THE ROLE

  • Ability to work irregular hours and on weekends (with time-in-lieu provisions for weekend work)
  • A current valid driver’s licence.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS

This is a 12 month, full-time contract position at Level 3 or 4 (approx. $72,600 – $83,000) of our classification structure, dependent on experience.

Victorian Trades Hall has an Enterprise Agreement with generous entitlements including:

  • 12 RDOs and additional paid days off (such as Easter Tuesday) each year
  • Time-In-Lieu provisions for weekend work
  • Paid Cultural and Religious Leave to observe diverse cultural or religious obligations not covered by Victorian public holidays
  • Paid Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural and Ceremonial Leave for the purpose of fulfilling cultural and ceremonial obligations and for participation in community organisation or other cultural events such as NAIDOC week.

This position will be based at Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton and will report to the Secretary through the Campaigns Team Lead.
