The Koorie Youth Council (KYC) is seeking two passionate Policy Advisors to join our Policy team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to systemic advocacy and policy reform that amplifies the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people across Victoria.

Working closely with the Policy Manager, you will undertake research, develop policy positions, engage with community, and influence decision makers on issues that matter to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

About Koorie Youth Council

The Koorie Youth Council (KYC) is the representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in Victoria. Guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and our statewide membership, KYC advocates for the rights, representation and participation of young people across the state.

Our vision is Koorie Youth, collectively creating our futures so that all young people feel safe, seen and heard.

Through policy, advocacy, leadership development and statewide events, including the annual Koorie Youth Summit, KYC works to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people have a genuine voice in the decisions that shape their lives.

About the Role

Reporting to the Policy Manager, you will support the development of evidence-based policy and advocacy across a diverse cross-sector portfolio. You will work collaboratively with young people, community organisations, government stakeholders and the wider KYC team to strengthen systemic advocacy and promote meaningful participation in public decision making.

This role combines research, policy development, stakeholder engagement and advocacy to help deliver positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

Key Responsibilities

As a Policy Advisor, you will:

  • Conduct policy research and analyse emerging issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Develop policy submissions, briefing papers, reports and advocacy positions.
  • Support consultations, forums, surveys and engagement activities with young people and community.
  • Represent KYC at meetings, forums and stakeholder consultations.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, government and sector partners.
  • Prepare timely advice and policy responses on government initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively across KYC projects, events and organisational priorities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and broader organisational initiatives.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A strong understanding of Victorian Aboriginal communities and the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.
  • Experience researching, analysing and developing policy.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to produce high-quality policy documents for a range of audiences.
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A willingness to travel throughout Victoria to engage with communities.
  • A commitment to culturally safe practice, the Victorian Child Safe Standards and ethical engagement with children and young people.

Essential Requirements

  • Qualifications in public policy, social research, community development or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Current Employee Working with Children Check.
  • Current Victorian Driver Licence.
  • National Criminal History Check.
  • Evidence of the right to work in Australia.
