The opportunity

In this role, you'll help improve the reliability and usability of VALS' service data, and increase the active use of that data by service managers for monitoring, insight and decision-making. You'll work closely with frontline teams to lift confidence in Actionstep data entry and reporting—so our services can better evidence impact, identify trends, meet compliance requirements, and inform policy advocacy and program design.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop and update practical training and guidance materials to support accurate, complete data entry in Actionstep (manuals, short videos, refreshers and team updates).
  • Deliver face-to-face training and refreshers for individuals and teams across Victorian sites.
  • Provide responsive, day-to-day guidance to staff on service-related data entry and system use.
  • Coach and support Actionstep "team champions" to build local capability and consistent practice.
  • Support service managers with data assurance—monitoring data quality, addressing gaps and coordinating data cleansing when needed.
  • Assist managers to generate key reports for operational monitoring, service insights, resourcing and improvement.
  • Support periodic compliance reporting to funders by helping ensure reports are complete and accurate.
  • Assist with simple data visualisations and support "sense-making" sessions that help teams interpret trends and act on insights.

What you'll bring

  • Experience working with data management systems/applications (experience with client information systems is highly regarded).
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with datasets to identify gaps, errors and inconsistencies.
  • Experience training and supporting frontline staff to collect high-quality service delivery data.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • High attention to detail and a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Desirable: experience with data visualisation tools/techniques.
  • Desirable: understanding of issues impacting Aboriginal people in the delivery of legal and related support services.
  • Cultural awareness and capability in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About VALS

VALS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and Victoria's specialist legal and support service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. About the Research & Evidence Development team

The Research & Evidence Development Unit builds the evidence base for the impact of VALS' services, supports the design and evaluation of innovative justice programs, and undertakes research that informs policy advocacy and responses to community need.
