At Victoria Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS), your work will help support access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Victoria.

As the state's only Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation dedicated to providing specialist legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we have been advocating for justice since 1973. Our services include criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice, specialist litigation, a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, family violence programs, housing support, and community legal education.

Our Finance team plays a critical role in ensuring these services can continue to operate sustainably and effectively. We're looking for an experienced Accountant who enjoys working collaboratively, values accuracy, and wants to contribute to an organisation with genuine purpose.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accountant provides professional accounting and financial support across the organisation.

Working closely with the CFO and Deputy CFO, you'll prepare statutory accounts, manage month-end reporting, assist with budgeting and forecasting, support payroll activities, and provide financial analysis that informs organisational decision-making.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Prepare annual statutory financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Assist with month-end and year-end financial reporting processes
  • Prepare journals, reconciliations and accounting adjustments
  • Develop and monitor budgets and financial forecasts
  • Analyse financial performance and prepare management reports
  • Support external audit processes and respond to audit enquiries
  • Provide payroll backup support when required
  • Assist the CFO and Deputy CFO with financial analysis and organisational reporting
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of finance processes and controls

About you

To be successful, you'll bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in a professional accounting role
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards
  • Experience preparing financial statements, budgets and management reports
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to explain financial information clearly to a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector will be highly regarded

Essential requirements

You'll also have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Accounting
  • Eligibility for CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand membership
  • Current Victorian Driver Licence
  • Employee Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain)
  • National Criminal History Check
  • Australian work rights
