Youth Development Coach - Permanency Support Program - Dubbo

Uniting (NSW.ACT)

About the Role

This is a permanent full-time opportunity working 35 hours / week and will be based in Dubbo with some travel across Western and Far-Western NSW.

We’re looking for a passionate and dedicated Youth Development Coach to join our Permanency Support Program (PSP). This unique role is all about empowering young people aged 15–18 to prepare for adulthood, navigate life’s challenges and transition successfully from out-of-home care into independence.

Working with a caseload of up to 10 young people, you’ll build strong, authentic relationships and use the Advantaged Thinking model to support young people to identify their strengths, set goals and create a future that reflects their hopes and aspirations. This is a voluntary program, giving you the opportunity to work alongside young people at their pace and in a way that is driven by their individual needs and goals.

This is a coaching role where you’ll work collaboratively with young people, PSP Caseworkers and external services to ensure each young person has a strong future plan and financial plan in place before leaving care. You’ll also provide guidance and coaching to PSP teams, facilitate future planning conversations and contribute to best practice across the service.

About You in the Role

You’re someone who genuinely enjoys working with young people and believes in their potential. You know how to build trust, have honest conversations and provide encouragement while respectfully challenging young people to achieve their goals.

You’ll be confident working collaboratively with caseworkers and services, sharing your knowledge and supporting best practice approaches to future planning. You thrive in a role that balances relationship-building, coaching and advocacy, while maintaining accurate records and meeting practice standards.

Most importantly, you’re passionate about supporting young people to develop the skills, confidence and connections they need to transition successfully into adulthood.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in youth work or related field (or equivalent partial completion of higher qualification) and/or minimum 2 years relevant PSP experience.
  • Experience or a strong understanding of the Permanency Support Program and child protection or out-of-home care sector.
  • Knowledge of the Advantage Thinking practice model inclusive coaching strategies, motivational interviewing, solution focussed questioning and trauma informed care.
  • An understanding of the unique challenges and impacts experienced by young people leaving care.
  • The ability to build meaningful relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal, CALD and LGBTI communities.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and relational practice.
  • A sound understanding of casework principles and the ability to work within a coaching framework.
  • Strong communication, organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Flexibility, resilience and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for young people.
  • A current NSW Driver Licence.

Even Better

  • Experience supporting young people transitioning from out-of-home care to independence.
  • Knowledge of the service systems and community supports available to young people leaving care.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring colleagues and contributing to practice development.
  • Familiarity with Advantaged Thinking principles and strengths-based approaches.
