Unions NSW is looking for a Communications Officer to join our Communications Team.
Job Role
The Communications Officer will work within the Unions NSW Communications team members to support the strategic aims of Unions NSW. Working alongside the Unions NSW teams, the role will focus on ensuring that the look and feel of Unions NSW campaigns is consistent, impactful, and authentic.
Main Responsibilities
- Produce high‑quality visual content for digital and print across campaigns, communications and promotions, including social media, videos, advertising, websites, signage, internal communications and merchandise.
- Develop, maintain, and ensure brand consistency of the Unions NSW brand and sub‑brands (including Gender Equity), including visual and non-visual elements such as brand guidelines, voice and tone.
- Lead the visual and creative direction of campaigns, translating research, strategy and messaging into compelling branding, creative assets and design systems that engage workers.
- Work closely with the campaigns, research, gender equity, migrant workers, heritage, administration and executive teams to develop and support their campaigns and projects.
- Lead multiple design and campaign projects from concept to delivery, coordinating timelines, workflows and deliverables across internal teams and external suppliers.
- Develop, maintain and organise brand, design and communications templates and asset libraries to support efficient, consistent and scalable content production.
- Manage relationships with external designers, agencies, printers and freelancers as required to support campaign delivery and production.
- Design and deliver merchandise and promotional materials that support Unions NSW campaigns and strengthen organisational visibility.
Experience and Essential Criteria
- 2 - 4 years’ experience in digital marketing, graphic design, video editing, online campaigning and organising, and or communications.
- Proficient graphic design skills, including proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud including Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
- Experience with video editing and/or production skills.
Skills and Competencies
- Exposure to campaigning theory and practise, such as working to a strategic plan, message or timeline.
- Strong design skills including understanding of layout, typography, colour, brand compliance and accessibility best practice.
- Ability to create campaign/communications material across different mediums including social media, web, email and print.
- Sound judgement and attention to detail, including experience reviewing and approving materials to ensure quality, accessibility and brand alignment.
- Experience with user-generated content (UGC) or influencer marketing.
- Ability to use CRM platforms and adapt to unfamiliar platforms.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytic and technical skills, with the ability to process data into actionable insights.
- Capacity to prioritise work, exercise judgement, initiative, while providing high level support within a highly charged environment.
- Ability to manage conflicting demands in an environment subject to sudden change.
- Proactive and self-directed while also able to work as a member of a team.
- A clear understanding and commitment to trade union principles.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in union, community, social justice organising or employment.
- Bilingual / multilingual
- Tertiary level qualification in communications, digital marketing or related area
Conditions and Entitlements
An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which includes:
- Personal Leave: 10 days per annum (accumulative).
- Annual Leave: 5 weeks annual leave plus additional leave over Christmas with 17.5% leave loading.
- Long Service Leave: 2 months after 10 years’ service.
- Domestic Violence Leave
- Superannuation guarantee (SG) employer contribution plus an additional 2% for female staff.
- Parental Leave: 52 weeks leave including 22 weeks paid parental leave or 3 weeks paid parental leave non-primary carer.

Hours of work
- 35 hours per week which includes some out of hours work and reasonable overtime. Will include some weekend work during peak campaigning periods.
