About the Role

As a Managing Lawyer within Djirra's Legal Service, you will lead culturally safe, specialist family violence legal services across a designated region. Reporting to senior leadership, you will oversee multidisciplinary legal teams, ensure high-quality legal practice, and maintain a small caseload of complex matters.

This role combines people leadership, operational oversight, legal supervision and strategic contribution while supporting vulnerable clients through a trauma-informed and culturally safe framework. You will also contribute to stakeholder engagement, service development and broader advocacy initiatives aimed at improving access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage legal teams across multiple regional sites
  • Supervise, mentor and support lawyers and support staff
  • Maintain a small caseload of complex legal matters
  • Ensure high-quality legal practice, compliance and service delivery standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, strategy and operational planning
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community, legal and government stakeholders
  • Support culturally safe, trauma-informed legal service delivery for Aboriginal clients

What You'll Bring

Essential

  • Eligible to hold an unrestricted practising certificate in Victoria
  • A degree in Law
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in family law, family violence, child protection, victims of crime assistance or related areas
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing legal or multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with vulnerable clients
  • Ability to manage complex matters, competing priorities and support staff development
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally safe practice

Desirable

  • Experience working within Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations or the community legal sector
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Policy, advocacy or law reform experience
  • Exposure to community legal education or outreach programs
