Heritage Services Manager - Gibson Desert North

Tjamu Tjamu (Aboriginal Corporation) RNTBC

about us

Kiwirrkurra People invite you to help them fulfil their responsibility to look after country and places of cultural importance. Tjamu Tjamu PBC wants to bring its business to Kiwirrkurra, to allow Kiwirrkurra People to see and participate in the administrative processes of looking after country and culture, particularly with respect to mining. Kiwirrkurra People have among the strongest community-controlled land access in Western Australia and want to use their say to get better outcomes for their community.

The Kiwirrkurra native title area is in the tali (sandhill) country of north east Western Australia. Kiwirrkurra Community is one of the most remote and isolated communities in the country, a 700km drive from Alice Springs along mainly rough gravel roads. The country is pre-dominantly looked after by those in Kiwirrkurra Community, but those with connections to the country live all over – Walungurru, Alice Springs, Balgo, Nyrripi, Haasts Bluff, north, south, east, west. Kiwirrkurra and Pintupi People have many stories of self-determination – walking back to their home (mainly from Papunya) in the 70s and 80s, helping start dialysis in Kintore and Kiwirrkurra through Purple House in 2000, having one of the first native title determinations, managing their land as an Indigenous Protection Area in 2014 and taking on the Leases of the Aboriginal Reserves in 2018.

about the role

Tjamu Tjamu PBC is going through a period of strong growth. We currently have one full-time, two part time (locally engaged) and many casual employees. We are now seeking our first Heritage Services Manager to contribute further to our strong track record of self-determination.

The role is part operations (coordinating surveys) and part project management (helping develop processes). The successful candidate will have a tangible effect on Kiwirrkurra People’s future through the solutions they help develop, the expertise they bring and their operationalisation of co-designed procedures. They will spend up to half their time in Kiwirrkurra Community, working from the new Tjamu Tjamu PBC office. We will support the successful candidate to transit to Alice Springs and allow them to work from home for the remainder of the time.

If this rewarding and challenging role is for you, you are used to working with a high level of autonomy, but you are also able to work constructively in a team and build consensus around actions. You value relationships and spending time with Kiwirrkurra People and enjoy significant time in community and on country. Outside the core heritage work, there is scope for you to demonstrate your particular skills working with Kiwirrkurra People on an exciting range of projects based on caring for country, strengthening family connections and maintaining culture.
