This is a unique opportunity to work alongside Aboriginal leadership, government and peak organisations to support Closing the Gap priorities and ensure Tiwi voices are represented in key decision-making forums across the Northern Territory.
Based in Darwin, this role includes regular travel to the Tiwi Islands and offers the chance to contribute to long-term, community-led change.
About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Advocacy, the Closing the Gap Policy Officer provides policy, research and coordination support to progress TLC’s strategic priorities.
Working closely with the Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory (APONT) network, you will support participation in major policy forums and contribute to advocacy and reform initiatives that directly impact Aboriginal communities across the NT.
Key responsibilities
- Support Aboriginal leadership to participate in high-level policy forums and governance processes
- Prepare policy briefings, submissions, reports and advice
- Undertake policy research and community consultation to inform advocacy and Tiwi-led priorities
- Represent TLC in working groups and cross-sector forums
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government, community-controlled organisations and key stakeholders
- Contribute to Closing the Gap implementation, monitoring and advocacy activities
- Ensure Tiwi perspectives and community priorities are reflected in policy development
About you
You are a collaborative and culturally respectful policy professional who is passionate about improving outcomes for Aboriginal communities.
You will bring:
- Strong research, analysis and policy development skills
- Excellent written communication skills, including experience preparing briefings and reports
- The ability to communicate effectively across cultures and with diverse audiences
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building capabilities
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Closing the Gap and Aboriginal policy contexts
- Cultural awareness and respect for Aboriginal people, communities and histories
Highly regarded
- Experience working with First Nations organisations or remote communities
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in public policy, social sciences, law or a related discipline
Additional requirements
- Current driver’s licence
- Ability to travel to remote communities, including light aircraft and ferry travel
- Ability to obtain an Ochre Card, National Police Check, First Aid certification and relevant permits
- Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency
