We are looking for experienced Solicitors at all levels to join our multidisciplinary team in Kununurra, working closely to deliver legal advice, information, advocacy, representation and education services to clients throughout the East Kimberly.

Who are Kimberley Community Legal Services?

We are an independent, not-for-profit community legal service, one of Australia's leading and largest remote civil law practices that predominantly supports aboriginal communities. A multidisciplinarity service, offering legal, social work, and financial counselling, we provide a free service to vulnerable community members experiencing disadvantage. We have offices in Kununurra and Broome, with regular outreach to urban and remote towns and communities in the beautiful Kimberley region.

No two days will look the same, but a typical day might entail:

  • Providing legal advice, assistance and representation to clients as part of an integrated holistic and client-focused service, including at remote outreach locations.
  • Provide (or receive for Junior Solicitors) professional support, mentorship and supervision to other staff as required, including legal interns, and pro bono lawyers.
  • Participate in identifying law reform priorities, and strategies to address them.
  • Participate in interagency networks, and build/maintain relationships with referring agencies, key organisations, community leaders and local people relevant to the area.
  • Assist in the preparation of plans including service delivery plans, and strategies as needed.
  • Undertake appropriate professional development activities to maintain and enhance the knowledge and skills required to fulfil the responsibilities of the position.

We are searching for THOSE who can meet most of the following:

  • Eligibility to hold an unrestricted practising certificate in WA (restricted for Junior Solicitor) and relevant post admission experience (at least 5 years post-admissions for Senior Solicitor level, 2 years post-admissions at Solicitor level).
  • Well-developed casework and advocacy experience in generalist areas of law including tenancy, child protection, family violence, or family law. Family and civil law experience highly regarded.
  • Experience in a community legal practice setting and/or community-based organisation in remote and rural Australia.
  • Highly developed written and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to apply these skills and concepts with a diverse range of people, groups, and organisations, reflecting on lawyering practice.
  • Critical written skills, including the ability to write sophisticated legal concepts in plain language
  • Sound organisational skills with the ability to manage workload, competing demands, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Understanding and commitment to principles of social justice and to working effectively with Indigenous people.
  • Experience in advising and representing people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and in developing and delivering community education programs.
  • Personal resilience, adaptability and ability to meet the challenges of remote service delivery.
  • Current driver’s license valid for use in WA.

Successful applicants will need to provide references, a recent WA Police Clearance, current Working with Children’s Check, and their working rights in Australia.
