ABOUT US:

STTARS is a non-government, not for profit organisation who have been operating in South Australia since 1991. STTARS has no political or religious affiliations.

STTARS provides counselling and support services to people from refugee and migrant backgrounds who have experienced torture or been traumatised as a result of persecution, violence, war or unlawful imprisonment prior to arrival in Australia.

We are currently looking for a highly experienced Counsellor to provide trauma informed, strength based and recovery orientated counselling for our clients.

The role of Counsellor will require a high level of professionalism complemented by a commitment to consistently deliver a high quality standard of work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Conducting specialised assessments and developing counselling plans with the active involvement of clients
  • Providing trauma informed strengths based counselling
  • Preparation and maintenance of client notes, files and reports
  • Advocating for individuals and their families for the purposes of establishing connections to appropriate services
  • Facilitating group activities with therapeutic purpose
  • Providing outreach and support services to clients
  • Attending supervision, training and team meetings as required

AS THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE ROLE YOU WILL:

  • Have relevant tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, counselling or related health or social science discipline.
  • Experience in the counselling of adults, children and young people, including recognising and responding to the effects of torture, trauma and the specific impact on family relationships.
  • Experience undertaking comprehensive psycho-social assessments to establish appropriate therapeutic goals with clients.
  • Experience and an understanding of adapting counselling practice to cultural sensitivities.
  • Experience in working with interpreters.
  • Knowledge of counselling models that are trauma informed, strength based and recovery orientated.
  • Have an understanding of psychological, social and cultural issues confronting asylum seekers and refugees.
  • Be flexible to work from various locations as required.

Salary is based on the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS) 2010 - Level 5. Salary packaging is available. Positions offered are fulltime and parttime to meet the needs of the organisation.
