About the service:

Safe Spaces Blacktown is an exciting new program. 

It provides a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for people experiencing psychological distress, allowing them to:

  • Identify alternatives to presenting to the Emergency Department for low-risk individuals
  • Access support from trained mental health professionals within their community, outside a clinical setting

Role overview:

  • Support the Service Manager in monitoring and continually improving the quality and safety of the service
  • Be involved in building and demonstrating a completely new service model for Western Sydney
  • Use a combination of evidence-based strategies underpinned by recovery orientated principles to provide assistance to individuals experiencing distress
  • Utilise a sensory modulation approach to build independence in developing and engaging in skills to build distress tolerance and support an individual’s capacity to alleviate and manage future psychosocial distress.
  • Carryout brief interventions
  • Work closely with services like police and hospital teams
  • Attend and contribute to interagencies, working groups and regional partnership meetings

  • Based in Blacktown
  • Part-time (0.7FTE) & Permanent
  • Hours of work: Wed to Sat (3pm-9pm) and every Monday (9am-1pm) - Monday hours can be flexible
  • Paying on SCHADs Level 3.4 (plus above award payment)

Requirements:

  • Ideally a completed Degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. Social Work, Psychology)
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in working with people experiencing mental illness, in immediate distress, and/or experiencing suicide ideation
  • Understanding of and ability to apply the principles of a recovery-oriented, person-centred, and strengths-based approach to service delivery
  • Experience using mental health assessment tools with distressed clients
  • Ability to implement and facilitate capacity building activities with participants
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and work independently
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving and organisational skills
  • Networking skills to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Current driver's licence with a good driving history and a registered, well-maintained vehicle that is available to be used for the purposes of this role
