About us

Stars Foundation provides school-based engagement support for First Nations girls in 59 schools across Australia.

An exciting opportunity to join the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School Stars team in Western Australia. There are currently three positions available, with one full-time ongoing and two full-time fixed-term (parental leave coverage) contracts available.

Stars provides a holistic program that supports Indigenous girls and young women to attend and remain engaged at school, complete Year 12 and move into full-time work or further study. The Stars Room is available to all members and provides a culturally safe, warm environment – a place where the girls and young women in our program feel nurtured and inspired.

The full-time Program Mentors deliver a diverse range of activities to support the Stars students to develop the self-esteem, confidence and life skills they need to successfully participate in school and transition into a positive and independent future. Mentors work within the Stars team and established guidelines, policies and mission of the Stars Foundation to mentor students, whilst also being part of the broader school community.

THE PROGRAM mentor WILL:

  • Be full time - Monday to Friday – with some after hours work (camps, sleepovers etc)
  • Work within a Stars team to provide daily support to Stars students at school
  • Supported by the Program Coordinator and Stars Regional Manager
  • Be located at Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with a strong understanding of Aboriginal people and culture
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment
  • High level verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound computer skills
  • Demonstrated skills in implementing policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation
  • Able to embrace a culturally diverse workforce
  • Valid Drivers Licence
  • Current Working With Children Check or the ability to obtain one prior to commencement

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES

  • Experience with program coordination in an educational or community development context
  • Demonstrated skills in team leadership and staff supervision
  • Water based qualification, either Bronze Medallion or Community Surf Rescue Certificate
