Thank you for your interest in applying for the position of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Youth Peer Support Worker.

We are seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with lived experience of social and emotional wellbeing concerns and recovery.

No formal qualification is required as we will support you to obtain a Certificate IV.

The Adelaide Primary Health Network has recently announced funding for three (3) full time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Peer Support Worker positions to be based at its headspace Adelaide, headspace Edinburgh North and headspace Onkaparinga centres. This equates to 1 full time worker per centre.

This funding is part of the ‘Enhancing headspace Services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth Project’ which aims to improve mental health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the Adelaide metropolitan region.

The project will improve the capacity of these headspace centres to deliver culturally appropriate, sensitive and safe primary mental health care services for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at risk of, or experiencing, mental health conditions.

The expected project outcomes are:

  1. improved mental health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
  2. increased access to, and availability of, culturally appropriate, safe and sensitive primary mental health care for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; and
  3. increased representation and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the primary mental health care workforce.

Your key responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Safely sharing your lived experience with others. This could be your having cared for someone with social emotional wellbeing difficulties or your own experience of social-emotional wellbeing difficulties
  • Offering hope and practical strategies to young people about social and emotional wellbeing recovery
  • Assessing young people's health and wellbeing needs
  • Collaborating on care plans
  • Providing non-clinical supports such as referrals and advocacy
  • Obtaining a Certificate IV in Peer Work, Mental Health or Youth Work (if you do not already have this level of qualification)

What is the role of a lead agency?

Each local headspace Centre is led by a lead agency on behalf of a local partnership of organisations responsible for the delivery of mental health, drug & alcohol and primary care services as well as community-based providers of vocational assistance and training.

Lead Agencies are locally based and run services that are able to share the vision of a headspace Centre and ensure this is appropriately meeting the needs of the local community.
