South-East Monash Legal Service (SMLS) is a community legal centre providing free legal help to people facing disadvantage in Melbourne’s south-east. We work to ensure people can understand and use the law, and we advocate for fairer systems and laws.
About the role
The Communications Officer supports the Head of Communications to deliver clear, accessible and engaging communications that promote SMLS’s legal services, community legal education and social justice work. You will help us reach disadvantaged communities, strengthen our profile and support our advocacy for systemic change.
Working one day per week on a 12-month fixed term contract, you will:
- Create and edit content for social media, website, newsletters and other publications in plain English.
- Support development of community legal education and promotional materials with our legal teams.
- Manage day-to-day social media posts, engagement and basic analytics.
- Help maintain our website content so it is current, accurate and accessible.
- Assist with media releases, media lists and monitoring coverage when required.
- Provide general communications administration and reporting support.
About you
You will be a strong writer and storyteller who is passionate about social justice and making legal information accessible. You are organised, comfortable juggling multiple tasks, and confident working both independently and collaboratively.
You will bring:
- Tertiary qualifications in communications, PR, marketing, journalism or similar, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience in communications, marketing or a related role.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including ability to produce plain English content for diverse audiences.
- Experience managing social media and digital channels (e.g. website CMS, e-news platforms).
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Desirable:
- Experience in the community legal, legal or not-for-profit sectors.
- Experience working with vulnerable or disadvantaged communities.
- Basic design and/or video skills (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or similar).
