Sisters In Spirit Aboriginal Corporation (SISAC) is a small all Aboriginal women-led organisation based in the ACT. Formally established in 2017 and officially launched in July 2021, SISAC was created in response to the need for a dedicated, culturally safe space for Aboriginal women and girls in the Canberra region. We exist to support, advocate for and walk alongside Aboriginal women and girls, ensuring they have access to justice, culturally safe support, and strong representation across legal and community systems. As an Aboriginal Community Controlled organisation, we are grounded in culture, accountability and the leadership of Aboriginal women, working to strengthen safety, voice and self-determination for our community.
The Advocate / Case Worker will provide culturally safe advocacy, case management and practical support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls in the ACT who are experiencing violence, trauma, or navigating complex systems.
Working alongside our women, this role supports clients to understand their rights, access services and safely engage with systems including police, courts, housing, child protection and legal services. The role provides trauma-informed support, risk assessment and safety planning, while advocating for women to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are recognised.
This role contributes to SISAC’s commitment to supporting Aboriginal women to access justice, safety and healing, while ensuring services are delivered in a culturally respectful, strengths-based and community-led way.
We are looking for an Aboriginal woman who is passionate about supporting and advocating for Aboriginal women and girls. You understand the challenges many of our women face when navigating systems such as police, courts, housing and child protection, and you are committed to walking alongside women with respect, compassion and strength.
You are someone who can build trust with community and create a safe, supportive environment for women seeking help. You are confident advocating for women, speaking up when systems are not working and helping women understand their rights and options. You are organised, reliable and able to manage case work while supporting women through complex and sometimes challenging circumstances.
You enjoy working in a small, supportive team and are willing to pitch in where needed. Most importantly, you bring a strong commitment to cultural safety, community and the wellbeing of Aboriginal women and families.
Being a woman is a genuine occupational qualification under the Discrimination Act1991 (ACT).
This is a designated position under s27 of the Discrimination Act 1991 (ACT) and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is considered essential and therefore a Confirmation of Aboriginality may be requested.
