Science Talent Search Committee Member

Science Teachers Association of Victoria Inc

The Science Talent Search (STS) is an initiative of the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria (STAV) and is one of Australia’s longest-running and most respected student science competitions. For 75 years, the program has encouraged curiosity, creativity and scientific thinking in young people across Victoria.

2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the Science Talent Search — making it an exciting and meaningful time to join the committee and help shape the future of this iconic program.

We are seeking enthusiastic and committed volunteers to join the Science Talent Search Committee and support the planning, promotion and delivery of the program. If you are passionate about science education and want to make a genuine contribution while growing your own skills and professional network, we’d love to hear from you.

About the role

As a member of the STS Committee, you will play an important role in delivering a program that has inspired generations of students to explore science. You will work alongside a collaborative team of educators, scientists and STEM advocates who are passionate about engaging young people in science learning.

This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute your expertise, while building experience in areas that directly support professional growth.

  • Volunteering as a judge to review student projects and provide constructive feedback
  • Supporting teachers and students with participation enquiries
  • Contributing ideas to enhance competition categories, processes and participant experience
  • Advocating for STEM learning and encouraging broader engagement in science education

Volunteering with STS offers a range of personal and professional benefits, including:

  • Develop assessment and evaluation skills: Build experience in judging, moderation, and providing constructive feedback on student work
  • Gain experience in program design and delivery: Contribute to the structure, criteria, and ongoing development of a statewide education program
  • Strengthen collaboration and leadership capability
Work within a committee environment, contributing to shared decision-making and outcomes
  • Expand your professional network: Connect with educators, STEM professionals, and industry peers across Victoria
  • Engage with emerging ideas in STEM education: Gain insight into student thinking, creativity, and current approaches to science learning
  • Contribute towards recognised professional development (PD) hours

Time commitment

We understand volunteers have busy schedules, so involvement is designed to be flexible and manageable.

Typical commitments include:

  • Approximately six committee meetings per year (held online in the evening)
  • Additional support during key planning periods throughout the year
  • Participation in the judging period during July and August (managed online)
  • Opportunities to contribute based on your availability and interests
