About this Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated In-House Lawyer to join our team. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will play a key role in supporting enforcement and compliance activities under the Animal Welfare Act 2002. 

This a hands-on role where you’ll manage prosecutions and civil forfeiture matters, provide legal advice to Inspectors, and work closely with both frontline teams and external pro bono lawyers.

This is a full-time position (38 hours/week), based in Malaga, with occasional travel required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare prosecution briefs and court documentation arising from RSPCA WA cruelty investigations
  • Coordinate the serving of notices for and attendance on court-related matters
  • Represent RSPCA WA in criminal and civil appearances in the Magistrates Court
  • Prosecute criminal hearings under the Act in both metropolitan and regional areas
  • Advise the Inspectorate throughout the prosecution process and assist inspectors with developing prosecution briefs
  • Undertake administrative work to ensure that case files are up-to-date and of a high professional standard

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • Law degree
  • Understanding of criminal law and practice, and the laws of evidence in WA
  • Ability to work independently, set and manage personal work priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral

Desirable:

  • Current practising certificate in WA, but law graduates working towards admission will be considered
  • Experience working with investigators, preparing instructions for a case, providing advice, and critically assessing investigation files

Please note: The successful applicant will require a police clearance, a driver’s licence, and full Australian working rights.
