RSL Victoria leads, represents and provides services to over 270 Sub-Branches across the state and currently has over 160,000 members. The RSL through its staff and volunteers provides assistance to past and present defence force personnel and their families with a range of services focussed on the DVA Wellbeing model for veterans, in Education, Employment, Health, Housing, Financial Support, Social Support & Connection, and Recognition of Service.

Unlike a solicitor, an RSL Military Compensation Advocate is someone who does not necessarily hold a qualification as a para legal or a law degree.

An advocate is one who “pleads in favour of another’s case, supports or urges by argument, defends, vindicates or espouses a cause”.

In the context of the RSL, a Military Compensation Advocate assists both serving and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and their widows to lodge claims for compensation to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).

THE ROLE:

  • Maintain a responsive, customer-focused approach and ensure the rights, needs and preferences of staff, volunteers and members of the veteran community are respected.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of all staff, volunteers and members of the ex-service community receiving assistance and support through RSL.
  • Comply with OH&S and other legislative requirements in relation to own work practices.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills relevant to position by participating in educational opportunities and maintaining continuous professional development.
  • Working in accordance with the Vision, Mission and Values of the Returned & Services League of Australia (Victorian Branch), Veteran Services Directorate (VSD).
  • Develop, foster, and maintain a sound professional working relationship with stakeholders such as, other Ex-Service Organisations (ESO), Case Officers / Delegates within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and RSL Sub-Branches.
  • Ensuring members of the ex-service community get access to rightful entitlements and services.
