About Us
When people talk about the Flying Doctor, thoughts generally turn to red-bellied planes undertaking rescue missions in the Outback. However, the current Victorian story is one that reflects today's challenges for people living in remote and rural communities across the state. While we do still transport people by air and by road, this work is complemented by a range of primary health services that address the most common issues people living in country Victoria face when accessing health care.
About the Role
As a specialist in driving standards and competency, you'll play a key role in ensuring safe, consistent and compliant driving practices across RFDS Victoria. This role suits someone who communicates confidently with people of all ages and backgrounds, is patient in their coaching approach, and thrives in a structured, compliance driven environment.
You'll shape organisational driving standards, deliver high-quality coaching, support incident investigations and strengthen our driving safety culture across both metropolitan and regional services. With a blend of technical expertise, coaching capability and analytical insight, you'll ensure every driver is equipped, supported and assessed to the highest standard. This role also offers significant autonomy, regular travel across branches, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact every day.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Lead the development and maintenance of organisational driving standards, competency frameworks and procedures, ensuring full compliance with legislation, regulations and road rules
- Embed best practice controls for safe driving, including fatigue management, distraction minimisation, route planning, mobile phone protocols, vehicle checks and grey fleet responsibilities
- Maintain accurate, auditable records of driver competencies, training activities and compliance documentation
- Deliver high-quality driver training and assessment (initial, refresher, remedial and induction) using blended learning methods and consistent competency-based approaches
- Provide structured assessments, incident-related remedial coaching and performance feedback in partnership with managers and People & Culture
- Support investigations of driving-related incidents and near misses, identifying contributing factors and recommending corrective actions
- Prepare clear reports, dashboards and performance evaluations, monitoring training completion, competency outcomes, incident trends and compliance
- Work occasional evenings/weekends and travel across metropolitan and regional VIC and NSW as required
To be successful, you will need:
- Strong expertise in driver training, assessment and road safety principles, backed by relevant qualifications and hands-on experience
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to connect with all types of learners, from young trainees to mature drivers who may be new to ambulance operations
- Patience, professionalism and a calm coaching style, especially when supporting at-risk or inexperienced drivers
- High levels of organisation and a commitment to compliance, including thorough documentation and consistent incident reporting
- The ability to work autonomously and comfortably spend long periods on the road, often travelling between branches
- Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training (Road Transport - Car Driving Instruction) and a Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence
- Demonstrated experience in driver education, competency-based assessments and remedial coaching, ideally including survival or defensive driving programs
- Strong knowledge of road rules, safe system driving and OHS/WHS legislation
- Certificate IV in Training & Assessment is desirable
- Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a current Working with Children's Check, National Police Check, and the right to work in Australia.
