An opportunity has now become available for an experienced Policy and Advocacy Advisor to join a small and dynamic team to contribute to policy and advocacy in mental health.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical speciality of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking a Policy and Advocacy Advisor to join the Bi-National & Committees team.

The Policy and Advocacy Advisor will proactively develop a range of key advocacy, policy, and research activities for the RANZCP NSW Branch. You will also build awareness of the central role and importance of the RANZCP in mental health care planning and delivery among NSW decision-makers.

This role has a specific focus to:

  • Identifying key issues and opportunities for the NSW Branch to proactively influence mental health policy.
  • Produce written and oral briefs for the NSW Branch, policy colleagues, and others based on reviews of literature and research.
  • Draft responses to consultations, submissions, and other correspondence to government and other key stakeholders.
  • Prepare submissions, fact sheets, reports, and other policy documents.
  • Prepare a column for each RANZCP NSW Branch newsletter.
  • Monitor, review and evaluate the implementation of policy and the impact of NSW Branch influence and activity.
  • Monitoring relevant mental health issues and legislation, and undertaking research and analysis to ensure the College is kept well informed of developments in mental health policy and social issues that have implications for the RANZCP.
  • Adapting existing national policies and position statements that reflect on important NSW issues.
  • Collaborating and building partnerships with relevant organisations and individuals.
  • Develop and maintain networks of relevant policy advisors and policymakers relevant to mental health.
  • Advise and work with the NSW Branch Committee Chair on identifying funding opportunities and developing project proposals that will enable the RANZCP to further its strategic objectives in NSW.
  • Ensure that the NSW Branch advocacy and policy initiatives are integrated with and strengthen those of the binational College.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and build relationships, and work collaboratively with and influence a range of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Confidence in dealing with senior government and other external and internal senior executives in all circumstances.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to grasp new concepts, absorb and analyse large amounts of information and produce succinct reports and briefing papers.
  • Demonstrated experience in a similar policy research and development role.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in a relevant health, social science, business, or research discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in researching issues, formulating recommendations, implementing decisions, and reviewing outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative, including the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
  • High-level planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities and work to tight or competing deadlines.
  • A high level of typing skills and computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience in database usage.
  • An understanding of and demonstrated ability to work with committees and individual committee members.
  • Experience in health or mental health is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of government structures and processes are desirable.
