The Racial Justice Centre (RJC) is looking for a Senior Solicitor who is dedicated to challenging racism and racial injustice. This role presents the opportunity to work directly with the Principal Solicitor. You will supervise and mentor secondee lawyers, and volunteer paralegals, and PLTs. In this role, you will significantly contribute to the human rights landscape and build a social justice movement.

Duties

Reporting to the Principal Solicitor, this role’s selection criteria and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing advice and representation to clients with discrimination claims and other ancillary claims where necessary
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of client files and timely data entry using Smokeball
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and maintenance of processes and procedures to ensure consistent and accurate services to clients
  • Prepare submissions, articles and reports for presentation at conferences and public forums as required
  • Speak to the media where necessary
  • Maintain and build relationships with important stakeholders
  • Maintain and build legal resources around discrimination law
  • Assist with major RJC events and community-building activities

Attributes

The ideal candidate must:

  • Be admitted to practice as a lawyer in an Australian jurisdiction
  • have at least 5 years PAE
  • have litigation experience federally and within any state jurisdiction
  • Be flexible and open-minded as the RJC operates as a startup, and we need team players coming on a journey with us
  • Have experience in discrimination laws both state and federally
  • Willing to get your hands into business, working with clients directly and creating value for the RJC as a front-line service
  • Self-driven with high initiative and independence, as well as being comfortable working across a team and cross functionally
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with constant changes both micro and macro and be willing and excited to adjust and adapt
  • Have a genuine passion for racial justice and racial equality.
