About Queensland Migrant WorkWise

Queensland Migrant WorkWise is a government funded initiative delivered through the Queensland Council of Unions providing education and information to temporary visa holders/migrant workers and their employers about their rights and obligations under the Migration Act.

Role Purpose

The role of an Outreach Officer is to:

  1. Develop networks and relationships with local stakeholders including union organisers, community organisations, local government, employer bodies such as local regional chambers of business, and employers who employ temporary visa holders to promote and deliver the program.
  2. Identify workplace and community settings to deliver education resources and including workplace induction meetings, community meetings, and regional worker education events. 
  3. Deliver education and information sessions to temporary visa holders and their employers on their respective rights and obligations under the Migration Act, as well as key workplace rights under the Fair Work Act and work health and safety laws.
  4. Review and provide feedback on the effectiveness and quality of information and education resources.

Key Selection Criteria

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  1. Personal experience as a migrant worker/temporary visa holder or substantial experience working closely with migrant workers/temporary visa holders in workplace or community settings.
  2. Ability to build relationships with different stakeholders, including unions, community organisations, government representatives, employer bodies, and local employers.
  3. Experience in identifying and using workplace and community settings to deliver outreach, education, or engagement activities.
  4. Ability to deliver clear and engaging education or information sessions to different audiences, including to migrant workers.
  5. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  6. Strong commitment to the principles of social justice, fairness, and the role of unions in protecting and promoting workers’ rights.

Other:

  • Evidence of your right to work. This could be a visa, evidence of permanent resident status, an Australian or New Zealand passport, Australian birth certificate or a certificate of Australian citizenship.
  • Australian drivers licence.

Travel and Hours of Work

  • A vehicle and fuel card will be provided for successful applicants for work purposes.
  • Successful applicants will be required to undertake regular travel on a weekly basis within their specified region and on occasion to Brisbane.
  • Ordinary hours of work are 38 hours each week to be performed Monday to Friday. Some out of hours work will be required to accommodate work requirements with flexibility in the span of hours. Other conditions are contained within a Staff Agreement.
