As an agency of PIFS, PTI Australia is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

THE OPPORTUNITY

We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on Marketing and Communications Manager to lead and deliver PTI Australia’s communications.

This role sits in a small, high-performing team and works closely with the Trade Commissioner. You’ll be responsible for how PTI Australia communicates its work and impact, while also producing high‑quality content, campaigns and outputs.

This is a hands-on role in a small team, with responsibility for both delivery and judgement across all communications outputs. You will lead key content, campaigns and publications, while also contributing directly to writing, editing and execution. The role works closely with the Trade Commissioner to shape messaging and ensure communications are clear, consistent and aligned with PTI priorities.

Given the size of the team, the role requires someone comfortable switching between strategic input and hands-on delivery as needed.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Marketing and Communications

  • Lead and deliver PTI Australia’s marketing and communications, including both strategy development and hands-on implementation.
  • Identify communications strategies and appropriate communication channels
  • Lead and contribute to PTI Australia’s publications for external promotion and internal communications.
  • Drive the implementation of marketing and communication campaigns adapting for local and international market needs.
  • Develop and deliver an annual marketing and communications strategy that supports PTI Australia’s strategic goals
  • Oversee the delivery and management of PTI Australia’s digital strategy across all platforms (social media, online, email etc.)
  • Ensure consistency and clarity of PTI Australia’s messaging across all outputs.

Strategic Planning / Reporting

  • Contribute to and implement communications plans, policies and supporting research for internal and external communications.
  • Translate PTI Australia’s strategic priorities into clear messaging, content and campaigns.
  • Drive the delivery of PTI Australia’s strategic plan
  • Monitor success of plans and recommend updates as required
  • Oversee development of research including Biennial Pacific Islands Export Survey
  • Prepare clear, well-structured reports (including quarterly updates and annual reporting) for the Trade Commissioner and key stakeholders.

Strategic Relationships & PR

  • Maintain and develop links with Australian, Pacific Island key partners including media outlets to facilitate advocacy for PTI Australia’s work.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with journalists, editors, and correspondents across Australian print, broadcast, and digital media.
  • Manage day-to-day media engagement, including responding to enquiries and preparing materials to support the Trade Commissioner.
  • Draft, review and distribute media releases, media advisories, op-eds, and statements on behalf of PTI Australia.
  • Monitor media coverage and provide timely, accurate analysis of Pacific-related reporting to the Trade Commissioner and team.
  • Manage proactive and reactive media enquiries and develop issues management and crisis communications plans.
  • Identify new relationships and manage current relationships with external organisations to increase the exposure of PTI Australia
  • Lead the preparation of speeches, talking points, briefing notes and correspondence for the Trade Commissioner.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with Australian universities, think tanks, NGOs, and cultural institutions with interests in the Pacific.

Digital Communications & Content

  • Lead and manage PTI Australia’s digital platforms including the website, social media channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram), and e-newsletters.
  • Produce and publish high-quality content, and directly contribute to writing, editing and content development across platforms.
  • Implement digital analytics reporting and use data insights to optimise content performance and audience reach.
  • Maintain brand consistency across all digital and physical communications materials in accordance with PTI Australia's visual identity guidelines.

Team support and coordination

  • Line manage two communications staff, providing clear direction, feedback and support, as well as contractors and interns as required.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and support to communications staff, acting as a working lead alongside delivery.
  • Manage the marketing and communications budget, including procurement of external creative, media monitoring and production services.
  • Step in across tasks where needed, particularly during high-volume periods or key deliverables.
  • Lift the overall quality and consistency of communications across the team

Other duties

Other duties may be allocated by the Trade Commissioner. These will be in accordance with the employees’ range of skills, competence, training and/or experience.

Experience/Qualifications

To be successful in this position you will possess the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Public Affairs, or a closely related discipline.
  • Extensive experience within Marketing/Communications, 5 years in a senior role
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing cross-channel marketing campaigns.
  • A working understanding of artificial intelligence tools and their application in communications and marketing workflows is valued, along with a genuine curiosity and willingness to grow your AI literacy as PTI Australia continues to explore and embed these technologies across the organisation.
  • Proven track record in developing and delivering strategic communications campaigns that translate into practical, measurable outcomes.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distil complex policy issues into clear, compelling public messaging.
  • Demonstrated experience managing media relations.
  • High-level proficiency across digital communications platforms, social media management tools, and content management systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for Pacific Island cultures, values, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple priorities under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and exercise sound judgement in complex or sensitive situations.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-management skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior officials, diplomats, media, and community stakeholders.
  • Be able to travel domestically and to the Pacific Islands.
