Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is a Martu organisation established in 2005. Martu are the traditional owners of the Martu native title determination and Karlamilyi National Park, spanning three desert bioregions and 15 million hectares. KJ’s on country work provides a foundation for many of KJ’s activities. It provides a major source of income for Martu families and grounds Martu engagement, pride and identity. On country work realises ubiquitous Martu aspirations: getting back to their traditional country, passing on knowledge to younger generations, looking after country and building sustainability for Martu communities.

About this position

The Community and Field Coordinator will work with Martu team members to facilitate, plan, organise and conduct work on-country and within remote Martu Western Desert communities WA.

Key Duties

  • Coordinate activities that build the skills and confidence of Martu
  • Take an active, community development approach that supports KJ’s goals and Martu aspirations
  • Support on-country work - day, overnight and multi-night trips, and longer and more specialised trips alongside other KJ staff members
  • Provide logistical, organisational, motivational and practical support for the on-country work
  • Motivate, support and organise Martu to be work ready – including assisting with planning, team training and team cohesion initiatives
  • Integrate learning opportunities into activities and help community team members to broaden their skills and abilities throughout all of KJ’s suite of programs
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an on-country skills training program
  • Organise essential food, equipment, technology and vehicles for community-based and on country work
  • Be responsible for all community-based KJ assets, including the management of plant, equipment and stock

Desirable experience

  • Experience in the delivery of field work
  • Experience in, or qualifications relating to, on country work, community development, environmental management or youth support
  • Experience in managing and maintaining equipment, technology and vehicles
  • High interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of people
  • A willingness to operate calmly in a cross-cultural environment where communication, understanding and life situations may be difficult
  • Organisational skills including the ability to multitask and work effectively with diverse and geographically spread people
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences

Necessary Requirements

  • Sound administrative skills
  • Competency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office
  • Four-wheel drive/off road experience
  • No impediments to holding a firearm licence
  • Ability and willingness to travel
