Lead the Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU), a statewide initiative supporting self advocacy groups for people with intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, and complex communication needs.

This is a senior role for someone who works well with others, understands trust, and is comfortable stepping back so people with disability can lead.

You’ll guide growth, support a strong team, and work alongside self advocacy groups to ensure their priorities shape decisions, practice, and influence.

The role focuses on strategy, relationships, and sustainability while keeping the work grounded in the leadership of people with disability.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver SARU’s strategy
  • Build strong relationships with self advocacy groups and partners
  • Represent SARU in sector and policy discussions
  • Oversee programs, resources, and training
  • Lead and support staff, including peer workers
  • Manage budgets and support funding development
  • Ensure governance, reporting, and compliance

About you

  • Experience leading teams, programs, or organisations
  • Builds strong, respectful relationships and works well across diverse groups
  • Exercises good judgement and is comfortable sharing leadership and decision-making with people with disability, including people with cognitive disability
  • Comfortable leading without needing to be the centre of attention
  • Experience in disability advocacy, self advocacy, or a related field
  • Understanding of disability rights and inclusive, participatory practice
  • Communicates clearly and accessibly, and adapts to different communication needs

Details

  • 30.4 hours per week (ongoing)
  • SCHADS Award Level 7.1
  • Melbourne-based, with travel required to regional Victoria including areas with limited public transport options
  • Flexible working conditions
  • Above award conditions including an additional week of annual leave between Christmas and New Year
