The Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) is recognised as the principal non-government organisation for public health in Australia working to promote the health and well-being of all Australians. It is the pre-eminent voice for the public’s health in Australia. The PHAA works to ensure that the public’s health is improved through sustained and determined efforts of the Board, the National Office, the State and Territory Branches, the Special Interest Groups and members.

About the opportunity

Policy Officer

PHAA is seeking a suitably qualified person to work full-time (37.5-hour week) in our National Office in Canberra, or if viable, remotely from elsewhere in Australia. As part of the Policy and Advocacy team, the Policy Officer will be responsible for contributing to the strategic direction of public health policy and communication activities with a particular focus on the policy activities of the organisation. This will include developing position statements, submissions, and advocacy letters; coordinating administration of the policy portfolio; and engaging and building relationships with key stakeholders and partnering organisations, and our members. The role will also involve working closely with the Media and Communications Team to assist in coordinating communication material.

  • Significant experience in a policy role with a major public health focus
  • Strong networks within the government framework
  • Ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a small team environment
  • Understanding of and commitment to improving health and wellbeing
