About the business and the role

APCO helps organisations to rethink their approach to packaging. To do this, we focus on three key areas: packaging design, systems, and education.

By working in partnership with government, industry and the community, we will deliver a sustainable approach to packaging that reduces its impact on the environment.

The Sustainability Manager supports the APCO team to deliver a range of operational and strategic sustainability resources that build positive working relationships with all APCO stakeholders.

Job tasks & responsibilities

Stakeholder engagement:

  • Increase stakeholders understanding of packaging sustainability through APCO programs
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key government and industry stakeholders and special interest groups
  • Inform stakeholders on the progress of APCO's delivery of strategic objectives
  • Represent and advocate on sustainable packaging outcomes within industry and government on behalf of APCO

Reporting, Monitoring & Project Management:

  • Analyse and effectively monitor APCO's progress towards the 2025 National Packaging Targets
  • Understand the current performance levels of APCO Members and identify points where APCO can provide resources and assistance to drive improved performances across both industry sectors and/or specific organisations
  • Advise APCO Executive on key sustainability issues influencing the delivery of APCO's strategic projects
  • Produce a range of reports for the Executive as required
  • Communicate sustainability initiatives to the APCO team, Members and stakeholders
  • Drive a culture of contemporary thinking and best practice across APCO
  • Develop and manage a team of sustainability professionals that are capable of managing sustainability projects
  • Lead and deliver key APCO sustainability projects directly and in co-ordination with other APCO team members

Executive:

  • Contribute to the development of the organisation's business plan, Statement of Intent and Strategic Plan
  • Contribute to developing, monitoring & reporting the organisation's progress in meeting its KPIs
  • Contribute to the organisation's change management plan
  • Contribute to the appraisal & implementation of organisational projects and initiatives
  • Contribute to the development of policy positions
  • Attend regular scheduled Executive, Board and team meetings via teleconference or in person as required

Skills and experience

  • Evaluation and development of methodologies for packaging sustainability initiatives
  • A strong understanding of packaging sustainability goals, life cycle values and systemic thinking
  • Development and evaluation of initiatives relating to strategic objectives and activities
