About Orygen

Orygen is Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health and the largest translational research organisation dedicated to youth mental health in the world.

For over 30 years, Orygen has led groundbreaking early intervention and developed evidence-based models of care to improve the mental health outcomes of young people aged 12-25.

About the job

The Product Owner – AI sits at the intersection of product ownership, AI and research, leading a cross-functional squad spanning engineering, data science, design, research, clinical and lived experience expertise.

Reporting to the Head of Product you will:

  • Shape the product roadmap for AI-powered mental health trials - turn research, clinical and lived experience insight into a sharp, prioritised backlog and drive agile delivery that keeps the squad moving.
  • Be the link between product and research - align delivery with research milestones, governance and funder requirements across two concurrent trials.
  • Champion responsible AI in delivery - build real fluency in both classical ML and generative AI/LLMs, set clear success metrics, and work closely with research and governance colleagues on the toughest go/no go calls.
  • Put young people at the centre of design - embed co-design and lived experience expertise into every stage of building AI-enabled features.
  • Grow product capability across Orygen Digital - share what you learn, shape ways of working, and represent the squad's priorities in divisional planning.

Skills and experience

The following criteria must be met for consideration for this position:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent professional experience, in technology, data, design, research, health, business or a related field.
  • Proven Product Owner/Manager who's led complex, multi-disciplinary digital products, sharp judgement, strong agile practice, and the ability to balance user needs, evidence and risk under real constraints.
  • Technically fluent enough to go toe-to-toe with data scientists and engineers on AI and data and hands-on experience with generative AI/LLMs or recommender systems.
  • A confident communicator who turns research and data into aligned decisions. Health, clinical or research-trial experience is desirable.
  • Decisive under ambiguity, genuinely collaborative and driven by real care for the young people these products are built for.

Candidates outside of Victoria will also be considered.

Benefits

  • $135,000 - $145,000 pro rata commensurate with skills and experience + 12% superannuation and $15,900 in NFP salary packaging + $2,600 meals and entertainment card.
  • Embrace the freedom of a hybrid work model, combining remote work with on-site collaboration.
  • Make a real impact on young people in a dynamic, youth-centred environment.
  • Work in a state-of-the-art facility co-designed with young people to advance youth mental health.
  • Support Orygen's mission for youth mental health and contribute to positive social change.
