About the Legal Aid NT:

Legal Aid NT is an independent statutory authority established under the Legal Aid Act 1990 (NT). Our purpose is to ensure that people in the Northern Territory understand their legal rights and disadvantaged people have access to quality legal services, and to uphold a fair Northern Territory and national justice system.

About the role:

You will partner with allied social support and health justice services to provide high quality legal advice, legal task assistance and duty lawyer services to those responding to Domestic Violence Orders applications in the Katherine Local Court. Focusing on family safety, working collaboratively with a Men’s Support and Mental Health Worker.

Also partnering with the local Aboriginal controlled health services and building upon Legal Aid NT’s growing expertise and leadership in Health Justice Partnership practice in Katherine. You will l play a vital role in the implementation of the ‘Model to Support the Response to DFSV in Katherine’ and development of a therapeutic domestic and family violence court.

This is part of a growing team of lawyers who are specialists in working with perpetrators of family violence. You will work closely with a client support worker, crime and health justice lawyers.

About you:

If you want to make a difference and have a passion for working in domestic and family violence. You have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work non-collusively with people with complex needs who are alleged to use violence either as primary victims or perpetrators.

You have or wish to gain experience working with First Nations clients, including with the assistance of the Aboriginal Interpreter Service (AIS).

You will have high-level of initiative, including the ability to work with minimal supervision in undertaking tasks and addressing challenges. You will have the ability to deliver high quality legal advice and representation to defendants to applications for domestic violence orders, and a range of related child protection and family law matters.
