About the role

  • Position Title: Research Officer
  • Position Purpose: Provide professional support in research methodology, research design, data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation and presentation of research to assist NTCOSS meet strategic goals.
  • Position Reports to: Policy Manager
  • Position Location: Darwin or Alice Springs
  • Industrial Instrument: The Fair Work Act 2009, Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services industry (SCHCADS) Award 2010 and the Northern Territory Council of Social Service Incorporated Enterprise Agreement 2017
  • Terms of Employment: Part Time (30 hours per week)
  • Award Classification: Social, Community, Home Care and  Disability Services Industry (SCHCADS) Award 2010 Social and Community Services Employees level 5    
  • Salary: Above Award at $80,000.00 per annum pro rata
  • Other Entitlements: 9.5% Superannuation paid to a fund of employee choice - 6 weeks annual leave at normal pay plus 17.5% leave loading - Grace leave for the working days occurring between Christmas and New Year public holidays (at normal pay).

Statement of Duties:

  1. Assist with the development and implementation of research projects related to social policy for a range of audiences including:
    • Drafting literature reviews and analysis, and organisational briefs
    • Developing, implementing and evaluating key stakeholder surveys, interviews, focus groups, workshops and other methods
    • Collecting data for case studies
    • Drafting reports based on the above
  2. Provide support to NTCOSS Policy Officers in managing research projects and collaborate on time-sensitive requests for research inputs.
  3. Assist the input by the Social and Community sector, including Aboriginal Controlled Organisations into Government social planning, reviews and community consultation processes and the development of NTCOSS submissions and social policy documents.
  4. Develop and/or support initiatives, including training, research and resource development around existing and emerging organisational priorities to the Social Services Community Sector in the NT.
  5. Assist in reviewing and editing NTCOSS submissions, public documents and other external publications.
  6. Other related duties as required by the CEO.

Position Attributes:

  1. Understanding of the policies and issues impacting on the social and community sector in the NT including knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal people in Australia and the issues affecting the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
  2. A genuine commitment to social justice principles including Aboriginal self-determination, professional ethical standards and diverse workplaces.
  3. Proven ability to integrate knowledge from a range of sources and then synthesise information to develop an understanding of relevant theoretical and empirical concepts,   including qualitative design and data collection methods.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, especially the ability to communicate effectively research findings to a range of audiences, translating theoretical, technical and statistical concepts into accessible papers, reports and/or presentations.
  5. An appropriate tertiary qualification.
  6. A current NT Working with Children Card and NT driver license.
