The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) is the registered union for all nurses and midwives in NSW. The Association represents the industrial interests of nurses and midwives employed in NSW in the public, private, aged care and primary healthcare sectors. About the role:

We are seeking a motivated and skilled Legal Officer to join our Professional Services Team. In this role, you will represent and advocate for the legal and professional interests of members, providing expert advice and representation across a range of legal and regulatory settings.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders and external bodies to support members through complex professional and disciplinary matters, while promoting the values and principles of trade unionism. This is a dynamic opportunity to contribute to a highly respected, member-focused organisation committed to advancing the nursing and midwifery professions.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide legal advice to members on professional conduct, registration matters, and coronial proceedings
  • Represent members as an advocate before bodies including the Coroner’s Court, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), Nursing and Midwifery Council, Health Care Complaints Committee (HCCC) and Professional Standards Committees
  • Prepare submissions, reports, and legal documentation to support member cases
  • Manage case files, including briefing and instructing legal counsel where required
  • Provide advice to internal stakeholders, including Officers and Elected Officials, on legal and disciplinary matters
  • Conduct seminars and professional education sessions for members
  • Engage with external stakeholders and advocate for members’ interests
  • Contribute to member recruitment initiatives and promote organisational values
  • Maintain high-quality legal service delivery and continuously develop professional skills

About your experience:

We’re looking for someone who brings a combination of relevant qualifications, practical experience, and strong skills to succeed in this role.

Essential:

  • Legal qualification with experience practising law and holding (or eligible to obtain) a current practising certificate
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and case management
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legislation and information
  • Proven experience preparing detailed submissions and reports
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, trade union principles
  • Knowledge of relevant legal, nursing, and health industry frameworks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general IT literacy

Desirable:

  • Professional qualification and/or experience in the nursing or broader health industry
