  • TOIL: Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) can be negotiated for extra hours worked.
  • Tenure: 18 months, includes 3-month probation period. (With possibility to extend pending funding)

About the role

The Teacher-Linguist will facilitate and support a Ngalakgan language school program based initially at Urapunga School and the Ngukurr Child and Family Centre (the Guluman Centre). The Teacher-Linguist role is to support local Aboriginal language workers to prepare content and deliver classes, track and report learning outcomes, mentor and coach staff, and liaise between the Language Centre and the Schools. You will be responsible for developing a long-term plan to ensure the ongoing health of a Ngalakgan language program at Urapunga and Ngukurr School. You will also support the Coordinator, and staff, to meet the aims and uphold the values of the Ngukurr Language Centre board. As an employee of Ngukurr Language Centre, the Teacher-Linguist will be answerable to the Coordinator of the Language Centre. In addition to this, the Teacher-Linguist will be required to report and provide regular updates to the Urapunga School Council, Ngukurr Child and Family Centre, the funding provider, and the Ngukurr Language Centre board.

Ngukurr is a large and friendly Aboriginal community (pop. 1000+) in Southern Arnhem Land. The community has 8-10 heritage languages that are all now endangered. The main language spoken now is Kriol. The community is surrounded by pristine landscapes and lies on the banks of the Roper River and is in close proximity to the Limmen National Park. It is a dry community.

About Ngukurr Language Centre

Ngukurr Language Centre Aboriginal Corporation, herein referred to as Ngukurr Language Centre, is an independent, locally-governed, not-for-profit organisation. The goal of the organisation is to revitalise, document, teach and promote the traditional languages of the Roper River region. This is achieved through the delivery of a range of community-based language programs and advocacy within the wider community. Ngukurr Language Centre was originally established in 1999 as a branch of the Katherine Regional Aboriginal Language Centre. It became an independent organisation in 2011 and has secure operational funding.

About Urapunga School and Ngukurr C.E.C.

Urapunga School is a remote Aboriginal community, approximately 600km southeast of Darwin and 30kms west of the Ngukurr township. The population is approximately 108. Urapunga and Ngukurr can be accessed via a sealed bitumen road all year round or via air through regular passenger transport flights. Urapunga has around 20 enrolments of students from Transition to Year 8, and one main school teacher / principal. Ngukurr CEC has approximately 280 enrolments from Transition to Year 12, providing education to students from 0 (FAFT) to Preschool to Year 12 and Pathways Programmes for students in 10, 11 and 12. Currently the school has six Primary classes and two Secondary classes.

Selection Criteria: Teacher-Linguist

Essential:

  • Demonstrated commitment to working respectfully with Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse peoples in an intercultural environment.
  • Qualifications and/or experience in Primary Education, language teaching or another relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to competing priorities, use initiative and communicate effectively and respectfully with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of historical, social, and political context of Aboriginal languages.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Roper Kriol and (where possible) multiple critically endangered languages.
  • Has or able to obtain Working with Children (Ochre Card) clearance and National Police Clearance.

Strongly Desirable:

  • Tertiary studies in linguistics or a relevant subject area.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal people in a community context.
  • Experience living and working in remote areas.
  • Experience supervising staff and/or delivering on-the-job training.
  • A valid Australian Driver’s Licence.
