Geospatial Analyst / GIS Team Leader

Nature Advisory is an employee-owned ecological consultancy, providing flora and fauna assessments for projects such as residential development and renewable energy projects. In response to our rapid growth, we are developing our GIS Systems and seek a skilled Geospatial Analyst to join and lead our GIS team. The GIS team comprises currently four GIS Analysts and supports a team of 60+ Botanists, Zoologists and Project Managers across Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Tasmania to collect, utilise and maintain geospatial data. The ideal candidate would have minimum 2 years’ experience, comprehensive knowledge of the technical and theoretical aspects that underpin Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and working knowledge of Esri Geospatial Suite (ArcMap, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro) and be a competent team leader.

This role presents an opportunity for someone who has gained experience working in a mid-level role and is ready take on more significant responsibilities. You will need to apply your skillset and knowledge to find solutions to a range of geospatial related challenges, design & implement best practice database systems to support our evolving mapping needs and keep up do date with available tools and technologies. You'll have the opportunity to work autonomously as well as in collaboration on various projects. Your role will involve leading and advising in geospatial database management, alongside contributing to the development of systems and team management.

This role is a permanent full-time position within Nature Advisory based in Melbourne. A permit to work in Australia is essential.

Key Responsibilities and Objectives:

  • Lead our GIS Analyst team by improving our systems to assign tasks, review current roles and monitor workload to ensure effective and timely delivery and quality of fauna, flora and habitat mapping outputs.
  • Manage our current geospatial database system (online & offline) and advise on the development and maintenance of best practice GIS database systems to meet company needs.
  • Ensure database performance, integrity, and security.
  • Develop and optimise spatial database systems for better data management.
  • Advise on hardware procurement and maintenance for the GIS team and field staff (Server, computers, tablets)
  • Perform installation, maintenance and support of system software/hardware and user support.
  • Stay current with GIS software and data capture tools; advise on improvements to our workflows.
  • Optimise remote and office working setups for speed and ease of use to support mapping tasks.
  • Support automation and custom geoprocessing tool development through coding
  • Provide troubleshooting support for bugs and issues with ESRI Field Maps
  • Manage subscriptions (ESRI, Nearmap, Vicmap) and cloud-based databases.
  • Assist with ArcMap 10.8 and ArcGIS Pro mapping tasks.
  • Advise on best practice digital security

Skills & Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in a related field with minimum 2 years working experience or equivalent
  • Work experience at an (ideally ecological) consultancy would be favourable
  • Extensive working knowledge of ESRI Suite, especially ArcMap 10, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGISOnline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the technical and theoretical aspects that underpin GeographicInformation Systems (GIS).
  • Highly organised, pedantic about naming conventions, clean code, documentation, andcorrect filing.
  • The ability to communicate complex information to technical and non-technical users
  • A collaborative, consultative and team orientated approach.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic and quick turnaround work environment, working collaboratively and leading a small team to solve challenges.
