  • Tenure: Part time, 3 days per week or 22.8 hrs. A 2 year contract with the scope of an extension.

About us:

The Murrumbeena Uniting Church (MUC) precinct is situated on Boon Wurrung country, in Murrumbeena Village and has been the home of a vibrant, joyful and supportive Christian Community since its settler Presbyterian and Methodist beginnings around 1900.

MUC is looking to extend the hiring of their spaces for the running of inclusive and accessible activities and programs for the wider community. They are establishing, using a foundation of Community Development principles, The Meeting Place. The Meeting Place will be home to more programs, activities and events alongside the existing Community Garden, pre-school aged children’s activities and other hall hirer programs.

The Role:

The Community Engagement Officer role has been created to meet the needs of the local community by inviting people/organisations to hire spaces in The Meeting Place to run creative and capacity building programs. Central to this role will be to nurture and build relationships with all stakeholders (MUC, hirers, participants, neighbours, community organisations and sports groups etc).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Community Development principles.
  • Work as a team with the Bookings Officer.
  • Report to the Minister.
  • Create effective communications connecting all aspects of The Meeting Place eg. Church congregation, Community Garden, hirers and participants.
  • Consult and collaborate with community members and community organisations.
  • Seek out and invite small businesses and practitioners to run workshops, programs, activities and events that meet the needs of the local community.
  • Manage venue bookings alongside the Bookings Officer.
  • Manage social media, website and advertising communications.
  • Manage all OH&S requirements including Fire Equipment Services (FES).
  • Work within a community development framework to build relationships with and between all the groups who will use The Meeting Place.
  • Induction of new hirers and activity leaders.
  • Collect, collate and analyse data for reporting.
  • Adhere to all MUC and Uniting Vic./Tas Policies and Procedures.

Skills and Attributes:

  • A qualification in Community Development or relevant experience in working with and for a diverse range of stakeholders (of all ages).
  • Demonstrated Marketing and Communications experience in communicating and advertising to a diverse audience using various channels including social media.
  • High level written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use a wide range of computer programs – Excel and Outlook is essential.
  • A commitment to using a Human Rights framework eg. respecting First Nations custodianship, inclusion of people with disability (including accessible communications), creating inclusion and safe places for people identifying as LGBTIQA+, celebrating multicultural and interfaith expressions.
  • A commitment to working with hospitality and generosity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
  • Evidence of excellent problem-solving, planning and organising skills.
  • Satisfactory National Police Check.
  • Working With Children’s Check.

Key Selection Criteria – to be addressed in a cover letter

  • Demonstrated experience in working with and for a diverse range of stakeholders (of all ages) eg. Places of Worship, local community members, community organisations, Primary Schools.
  • Ability to work within a church context, within the ethos of the Uniting Church in Australia.
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating and advertising to a diverse audience including social media.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to use a wide range of computer programs – Excel and Outlook is essential.
  • A demonstrated commitment to using a Human Rights framework eg. respecting First Nations custodianship, inclusion of people with disability (including accessible communications), creating inclusion and safe places for people identifying as LGBTIQA+, celebrating multicultural and interfaith expressions.
