About us

The Medical Scientists Association of Victoria, a part of the Health Services Union, is a small and growing trade union proudly representing workers in public, community and private health settings, working as medical scientists, hospital pharmacists, psychologists, medical physicists, dietitians, audiologists, genetic counsellors and clinical perfusionists across Victoria.

We are looking for a capable Industrial Officer to join our established team.

We offer a unique working environment where you get to control much of the flow of your work. There is real flexibility for you to shape the role within the scope of your professional experience and interest. The role will involve aspects of both organising and industrial work.

We provide all our team with real flexibility with a genuine balance of office based and work from home combined with occasional regional travel.

Key responsibilities

We're looking for an experienced person who can perform in the following areas:

  • Enterprise Agreements – the ability to be able to run the process from start to finish (with support from senior staff) including claim development, negotiations, member organising and report backs and navigating the approval process with the Fair Work Commission
  • Interpret industrial agreements and provide written and oral advice to members
  • Organising workers and joining new members to the union
  • Prepare and advocate before the Fair Work Commission and other jurisdictions as necessary (normally only to conciliation)
  • Represent individual members in grievances and support teams to navigate workplace disputes
  • Support members to resolve underpayment claims
  • Provide advise within the union on government industrial policies and legislation which will impact members
  • Prepare communication for members including newsletters, bulletins and magazine articles on relevant industrial issues

Position requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to union values and social justice principles
  • Experience in industrial relations or a related field
  • High level written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience developing and implementing industrial relations strategies
  • Previous experience and understanding of Industrial Relations processes before the Commission or other courts/tribunals
  • Research and problem solving skills
  • Experience in managing complex cases
  • Good planning and organisational skills (experience establishing priorities, allocating resources and meeting deadlines)
  • The ability to identify and develop new activists amongst the membership
  • A current Victorian drivers license and eligibility to hold a Right of Entry Permit in accordance with the Fair Work Act.

Wages and hours of work

The terms and conditions we provide our workers are heavily based on what negotiate for our key member groups:

  • Salary range $105 149 p.a. and $132 305 p.a. commensurate with skills and experience (includes superannuated motor vehicle allowance of $23 177 p.a.).
  • ADO / RDO per month
  • 5 weeks annual leave
  • Additional higher qualifications allowance where relevant
  • Three additional days paid leave over Christmas / New Year period
  • Long Service Leave entitlement of 6 months after 15 years, able to be accessed pro rata after 5 years
  • Discretionary 2% allowance which may be paid directly as salary or additional superannuation.

Work is performed hybrid; both on site and working from home. We are advertising for a full-time position, however we are certainly open to part-time arrangements and flexible working hours depending on the successful candidate.
