The Opportunity

Join Moonee Valley City Council's Climate and Environment Resilience team in a strategic leadership role where you'll help shape the future of our city. As the Senior Climate Resilience Officer, you will lead the development and delivery of climate adaptation and mitigation projects, policies and programs that support Council's commitment to achieving net zero community emissions by 2040 and building a climate resilient city.
Working across the organisation and with government, industry and community partners, you'll provide expert advice on climate resilience, environmentally sustainable design (ESD), urban forest outcomes and climate risk, while leading projects that influence long-term strategic planning and city shaping initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Climate Resilience Strategy and Project Delivery
- Lead the development and delivery of climate resilience projects and programs that contribute to Council's Corporate Strategy and climate objectives.
- Coordinate cross-Council initiatives that reduce strategic climate risks, including preparing business cases in line with Council's Investment Framework.
- Identify, develop and implement opportunities that support the transition to a low carbon, climate resilient city.
- Undertake research and analysis on emerging trends, technologies, policy and innovation to inform strategic decision making.
Climate Adaptation and Sustainability
- Provide specialist advice on climate adaptation, climate mitigation, climate risk and environmental sustainability across the organisation.
- Lead strategic initiatives to increase private land canopy cover through policy development and integration with Council strategies.
- Provide technical advice on Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) to improve environmental and operational outcomes for Council buildings and facilities.
- Support Council's climate reporting and contribute to the development of evidence-based climate resilience initiatives.
Stakeholder Engagement and Leadership
- Build strong collaborative relationships across Council, government agencies, industry, community organisations and regional partnerships.
- Lead climate advocacy initiatives with State and Federal Government and represent Council on climate resilience matters.
- Coordinate staff engagement and capacity-building initiatives that strengthen organisational understanding and action on climate change.
- Prepare high-quality reports, briefings, workshops and presentations for Council, Executive and other stakeholders.
Skills & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Environmental Management, Environmentally Sustainable Design, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience delivering climate change, environmental sustainability or climate resilience projects, preferably within local government.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex projects from planning through to implementation, including budgets, consultants and multiple stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of climate adaptation, climate mitigation, climate risk assessment, urban forest planning and environmentally sustainable design principles.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical and innovative solutions.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing reports, business cases and presentations for senior stakeholders.
- Proven ability to build collaborative relationships across multidisciplinary teams and influence positive outcomes.
- Current Victorian Driver Licence.
